The mission of the Southeast Seattle Education Coalition SESEC is to rally communities of color and allies to improve SE Seattle schools so that all students succeed and all families are empowered.

Data Project - The Data Project is a multi-step process of undertanding the barriers schools and communities face when it comes to assessing and analyzing data. The project includes partnering with community based organizations and conducting workshops on data analysis, using the data for data literacy and working to use data in policy advocacy efforts. SESEC is in partnership with 2 community organizations and 1 school district. Services are measured by the number of trainings provided to the community organizations and the development of a working partnership with the school district on sharing data.

Coalition - SESEC hosts monthly coalition meetings where topics of community interest are presented and discussed and community recommendations are shared with the presenters. Topics include planned capital expenditures by Seattle Public Schools, disciplinary policies, educational equity and justice, histories of indiginous peoples. SESEC also hosts an annual conversation on race and equity.

Advocacy Family Engagement - SESEC manages a bi-annual Family Engagement Survey to assess opinions of families of color on the engagement and communiciation practices of local schools. The survey results are used to affect positive changes in those practices to make them more culturally aware and to make schools a more inviting and welcoming place for families of color and immigrant/refugee families. This also includes Advocacy and Policy Cohort programs which immerse emerging community leaders and parents/guardians in discussions that demystify educational policies, prepares participants to effectivty advocate and develop leadership skills to heighten participation in schools and other civic forums.
