Organizations Filed Purposes:
To guide and support students and K-12 school communities to be leaders for a healthy environment. The organization offers training and resources for teachers, school districts, and partners that educate students to protect the environment.
WGS envisions that every school will teach, model, and practice environmental sustainability and every young person will learn and grow in a green and healthy school.
Climate Education: Washington Green Schools provides professional development and resources for educators to teach students about climate change, its local impacts, and possible solutions. With resources rooted in state science standards, ClimEd supports teachers to strengthen students knowledge and skills. WGS collaborates with school districts, university scientists, and local partners to make climate change accessible and relevant for school communities across the state.
School District Sustainability Programs: Washington Green Schools offers STEM-based programs that increase students environmental literacy and build their critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. One example is Zombie Guacamole, a hands-on science unit in which students explore the food system and its environmental impacts. Other programs, including Energy Matters and Breathing Easier, guide students to understand environmental issues in their communities and develop their own solutions.
Green Schools Certification: The Green Schools Certification program supports students to design and complete environmental action projects in their schools. From reducing waste to cultivating campus gardens, certification projects engage the whole school community in advancing environmental sustainability. With resources from WGS to complete the process, schools receive recognition and rewards when they certify as green schools.
