Whim W'Him aims to provide a platform, centered on choreography and dance, for artists to explore their craft through innovation and collaboration.
Whim W'Him is Seattle's leading contemporary dance company. Each year the company presents three productions of new dance works in collaboration with choreographers from around the globe and a company of seven dancers. Whim W'Him also produces several public events, master classes, workshops and community engagement activities to connect artists and audiences in meaningful conversations about contemporary dance and its capacity to build empathy and community.
Choreographic Shindig V: The fifth annual Choreographic Shindig was held in September 2019 at the Erickson Theatre Off Broadway in Seattle. We served 645 individuals over 7 performances. For this program, our dancers are given the power to curate and choose the choreographers they want to work with. This year, they picked Kyra Jean Green, Joshua Manculich, and Yoshito Sakuraba.
XPRESS: XPRESS was our January 2020 production, featuring 3 new contemporary dance creations by choreographers Sidra Bell, Ihsan Rustem, and Olivier Wevers. 1,048 people attended the 4 performances at the Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center.
XALT: XALT was scheduled to be Whim W'Him's May 2020 production. Whim W'Him cancelled live performances of XALT in March due to the coronavirus and public safety mandates. Whim W'Him committed to re-imagining XALT as a program of dance films to be released during the 2020/21 season. Program revenue includes subscription income allocated for XALT. Program expenses include costs incurred prior to cancellation of live performances.
