WASHINGTON ALLIANCE FOR BETTER SCHOOLS IS A 501(C)3 NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED IN 1995. IT IS A COLLABORATIVE OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT LEVERAGES RESOURCES, TALENT AND INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL TO HELP OVER A QUARTER MILLION STUDENTS GRADUATE CAREER AND COLLEGE READY. WASHINGTON ALLIANCE FOR BETTER SCHOOLS IS THE RECIPIENT OF EDUCATIONALLY-BASED STATE, FEDERAL AND PRIVATE GRANTS WHICH PROVIDE FUNDING FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION, EVALUATION AND REPORTING OF EACH GRANT RECEIVED.
21ST CENTURY - WABS' 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS HELPS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS DEVELOP TO THEIR FULL ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, AND PHYSICAL POTENTIAL. WITH TITLE IV FUNDS, WABS PROVIDES HIGH QUALITY AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MARYSVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO HELP STUDENTS MEET STATE AND LOCAL ACADEMIC STANDARDS IN CORE CONTENT AREAS. THIS INCLUDES TUTORING AND HOMEWORK HELP FOR MATH AND READING, YOUTH ENRICHMENT AND RECREATION PROGRAMS, AND HANDS ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING TUTORING AND ENRICHMENT SERVICES, WABS' STAFF COORDINATE CURRICULA BETWEEN CLASSROOMS AND AFTER SCHOOL/SUMMER PROGRAMS TO REINFORCE AND COMPLEMENT THE REGULAR ACADEMIC PROGRAM. ADDITIONALLY, WABS PROVIDES PARENTS AND FAMILIES EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO INCREASE ADULT LITERACY AND RELATED EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT. IN 2019 AND 2018, WABS IMPLEMENTED 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS AT FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS (CASCADE, LIBERTY, QUIL CEDA, AND SHOULTES).
STEM EXTERNSHIP AND STEM FELLOWS - THE STEM EXTERNSHIP AND STEM FELLOWS PROGRAMS OFFER TEACHERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE WITH INDUSTRY AND HIGHER EDUCATION PARTNERS TO BRING CAREER CONNECTED LEARNING TO THEIR CLASSROOMS, SO STUDENTS CAN HAVE A STRONGER UNDERSTANDING OF CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND PATHWAYS.TEACHER PARTICIPANTS IN THE STEM EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM TAKE A DEEP-DIVE INTO SUPPORTING CAREER CONNECTED LEARNING BY PARTICIPATING IN A WORKPLACE "EXTERNSHIP" EXPERIENCE. IN ADDITION TO BEING EMBEDDED IN AN INDUSTRY SITE TO GAIN HANDS-ON PROFESSIONAL UNDERSTANDING, PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT INCLUDES FIELD TRIPS TO INDUSTRY SITES AND NON-TRADITIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION PATHWAY SITES SUCH AS RENTON TECHNICAL COLLEGE OR AMTEC ("ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING AND EDUCATION CENTER").IN 2019 AND 2018, TEACHER EXTERNS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT NEW INDUSTRY PARTNERS: PORT OF SEATTLE AND T-MOBILE. ON BOTH TRIPS, THEY LEARNED ABOUT NEW AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, THE WORKFORCE NEEDS OF THE TRANSPORTATION AND TECHNOLOGY SECTORS, AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN WORKSITE TOURS AND INTERNSHIPS.THROUGH THE STEM FELLOWS PROGRAM, TEAMS OF EDUCATORS AND INDUSTRY VOLUNTEERS DEVELOP CAREER CONNECTED LEARNING UNITS THAT INTEGRATE SCHOOL DAY CONTENT WITH REAL-WORLD INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE. THE HIGH-QUALITY CURRICULUM CREATED IS TAUGHT AND SHARED VIA WABS' WEBSITE, SO THEY ARE USED YEAR AFTER YEAR. AFTER-SCHOOL STEM ACADEMY - FOR THE PAST 14 YEARS, WABS' AFTER-SCHOOL STEM ACADEMY HAS BROUGHT INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS INTO THE CLASSROOM AFTER SCHOOL TO HELP ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS BUILD 21ST CENTURY SKILLS AND GAIN AN AWARENESS OF CAREER PATHWAYS. STEM INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO LEAD SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES THAT ENCOURAGE COLLABORATION, COMMUNICATION, CREATIVITY, AND CRITICAL THINKING, USING A CURRICULUM BASED ON REAL-WORLD WORKPLACE CHALLENGES. ENGINEERS AND OTHER STEM PROFESSIONALS VOLUNTEER IN THE AFTER SCHOOL STEM ACADEMY PROGRAM FOR SIX WEEKS EACH QUARTER, LEADING ONE HOUR SESSIONS OF HANDS ON GROUP ACTIVITIES THAT REINFORCE STEM CONCEPTS FOR STUDENTS (GRADES 4 - 8). AFTER-SCHOOL STEM ACADEMY IS EXPANDING BOTH IN THE SCHOOLS BEING SERVED AND IN THE INDUSTRY VOLUNTEERS TO WORK WITH STUDENTS. PARTNERS IN THIS PROGRAM INCLUDE THE BOEING COMPANY, MCKINSTRY, PROVIDENCE ST. JOSEPH HEALTH, STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON, AND T-MOBILE.
NATURAL LEADERS - SINCE 2003, THE NATURAL LEADERS PROGRAM HAS PROMOTED EQUITABLE OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS BY EMPOWERING FAMILIES FROM UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS TO BE ARMED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND TOOLS NEEDED TO NAVIGATE THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM. NATURAL LEADERS IS A GRASSROOTS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES PARENTS, PARTICULARLY THE IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE POPULATION, WITH THE TOOLS TO HELP REDUCE THE LANGUAGE, CULTURAL, AND SYSTEMIC BARRIERS THAT IMPACT STUDENT SUCCESS. NATURAL LEADERS GO THROUGH A RIGOROUS TRAINING PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES THEM WITH THE TOOLS TO PARTNER WITH SCHOOL STAFF, BUSINESSES, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AS WELL AS RECRUITING ADDITIONAL PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO IMPLEMENT TRAININGS AND PROGRAMS THAT ARE NEEDED WITHIN THEIR SCHOOL COMMUNITY.
