THE MISSION OF THE NORTHWEST RAILWAY MUSEUM IS TO DEVELOP AND OPERATE AN OUTSTANDING RAILWAY MUSEUM THAT PROVIDES THE PUBLIC A PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE EXCITEMENT OF A WORKING RAILROAD AND TO SEE AND UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RAILROADS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND SETTLEMENT OF WASHINGTON STATE AND ADJACENT TERRITORIES.
INTERPRETIVE RAILWAY - THE MUSEUM OFFERS EXPERIENTIAL LIVING HISTORYPROGRAMS WHERE VISITORS TRAVEL BY TRAIN ON A 19TH CENTURY RAILWAY BETWEEN TWO COMMUNITIES IN WESTERN WASHINGTON. THESE PROGRAMS INTERPRET THE ROLE OF THE RAILWAY IN THE SETTLEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGION, AND ALLOW VISITORS TO EXPERIENCE THE EXCITEMENT OF A WORKING RAILWAY IN AN ERA BEFORE INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS. OVERALL, INTERPRETIVE RAILWAY PROGRAMS INCLUDING SCHOOL TRAIN, REGULAR WEEKEND TRAINS, AND THEMED EVENTS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN REACHED A COMBINED TOTAL OF MORE THAN 49,000 PEOPLE.
COLLECTION CARE - THE CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION CENTER IS APURPOSE-BUILT FACILITY USED TO PERFORM COLLECTION CARE ON LARGE RAILROAD ARTIFACTS. IT INCORPORATES 8,200 SQ. FT., FEATURES TWO TRACKS, AND A DIVERSITY OF SPECIALTY TOOLS INCLUDING PLANERS, LATHES, MILLING MACHINES, SAWS, TENONERS, DRILLS, JACKS AND MORE. THE PRINCIPLE PROJECT IN 2019 WAS CONTINUED REHABILITATION OF STEAM LOCOMOTIVE 924, A ROGERS-BUILT 0-6-0 SWITCHER BUILT IN 1899. THIS KING COUNTY LANDMARK RECEIVED ADDITIONAL BOILER REPAIRS AND THE RESTORATION OF A WOODEN CAB. ALSO IN 2019, VOLUNTEERS REHABILITATED THE UPPER ROOF DECK OF SPOKANE, PORTLAND AND SEATTLE COACH 213, A 1912-BUILT WOOD COACH.
TRAIN SHED EXHIBIT HALL - THE SEMI-CONDITIONED SPACE INCORPORATESMORE THAN 24,000 SQ. FT. AND OFFERS A STABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE MUSEUM'S MOST VULNERABLE AND REPRESENTATIVE ARTIFACTS INCLUDING CHAPEL CAR 5 MESSENGER OF PEACE, WHITE RIVER LUMBER CABOOSE 001, WEYERHAEUSER TIMBER LOCOMOTIVE 1, AND GREAT NORTHERN CABOOSE X-101. VISITORS WHO TRAVELED ON REGULAR WEEKEND TRAINS ALSO VISITED THE TRAIN SHED. IN 2019 ADDITIONAL SMALL ARTIFACT EXHIBITS WERE INSTALLED IN THE TRAIN SHED.
