PRESERVES AND REVITALIZES OUR INLAND NORTHWEST FORESTS, WATER, AND WILDLIFE THROUGH ADVOCACY, EDUCATION, EFFECTIVE ACTION, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
NATIONAL FOREST AND WILDLIFE PROGRAM: TLC'S FOREST AND WILDLIFE PROGRAM SEEKS TO PROTECT OLD GROWTH, IMPROVE FOREST MANAGEMENT, PERMANENTLY PROTECT ROADLESS AREAS AS WILDERNESS, AND INCREASE POPULATIONS OF RARE, THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES ON THE PUBLIC FORESTS IN THE INLAND NORTHWEST. TO ACHIEVE OUR GOALS WE USE SCIENCE, COLLABORATION, AND WHEN NECESSARY, LITIGATION. WE PARTICIPATE IN FOREST MANAGEMENT PROJECTS IN NE WASHINGTON, N IDAHO AND NW MONTANA. WE HAVE HELPED START FOUR COLLABORATIVE GROUPS ON THREE NATIONAL FORESTS THAT INCLUDE DIVERSE RURAL AND URBAN STAKEHOLDERS.
WATERSHED PROTECTION AND RESTORATION PROGRAM: TLC'S WATERSHED PROGRAM WORKS IN THE SPOKANE AND COEUR D'ALENE RIVER WATERSHEDS TO RESTORE WATER QUALITY. WE IMPROVE STREAMSIDE HABITAT BY PLANTING NATIVE TREES AND PLANTS, WORK TO REDUCE TOXICS FLOWING TO THE RIVER WITH UNIQUE PROJECTS THAT CAPTURE AND CLEAN POLLUTED STORMWATER. WE ARE WORKING WITH A DIVERSITY OF PARTNERS AS PART OF THE SPOKANE RIVER REGIONAL TOXICS TASK FORCE - WITH A GOAL OF MEETING WATER QUALITY STANDARDS IN THE SPOKANE RIVER. WE ARE PIONEERING THE USE OF MYCOREMEDIATION (FUNGI) TO BREAK DOWN TOXICS SUBSTANCES SUCH AS POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYLS. OUR BEAVER SOLUTION PROGRAM HELPS PROPERTY OWNERS MANAGE BEAVER, AS WELL AS RELOCATE BEAVER TO STREAMS WHERE THEY WILL THRIVE AND STORE WATER IN THE UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER WATERSHED. WE ARE PART OF A VOLUNTARY STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM TO IMPROVE WATER AND SHORELINE MANAGEMENT IN STEVENS COUNTY.
URBAN ECOLOGY PROGRAM: OUR URBAN ECOLOGY WORK INVOLVES OUTREACH TO LOW INCOME AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES TO INFORM THEM ABOUT EFFORTS TO REDUCE EXPOSURE TO TOXIC CHEMICALS IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT. OUR PROJECT SUSTAIN WORKS WITH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OUR REGION TO GIVE THEM OUTDOORS, HANDS-ON, AND ECOLOGICALLY BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES. OUR PROJECT GREENSLEEVES WORKS WITH THE GEIGER CORRECTIONAL FACILITY TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO OFFENDERS, WHERE THEY ALSO HELP TO MAINTAIN A TREE NURSERY FOR US AT THE FACILITY. OUR ENERGY PROGRAM WORKS TO IMPROVE SAFE RAIL TRANSIT THROUGH SPOKANE BY REDUCING OIL AND COAL SHIPMENTS. WE WORK TO REDUCE THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE BY ADVOCATING FOR THE USE OF CLEAN AND RENEWABLE ENERGY.
