Organizations Filed Purposes: Safe Streets mobilizes grassroots community by motivating and inspiring action in the community; teaching leadership strategies so community members solve their own problems; assisting neighborhoods and youth to define their vision for change; and connecting people and organizations for success.

COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION-In 2018 Safe Streets organized many neighborhoods and community groups with 76 current active groups to take action and create safe neighborhoods through observing/reporting of criminal activity to create safe and family friendly spaces within their neighborhoods. Safe Streets has mobilized many volunteers through Pierce County by block, neighborhood and community organizing, leadership development, public education and presentations, and building partnerships for a safe community. Total clients serviced in 2018 has increased slightly due to new partnership with Pierce County Sheriff's Department and referrals from their Community Liaison Deputy's to help in areas that have typically been difficult to reach. We have 1,123 registered neighborhood group members, 3,255 group member hours volunteering for safe, healthy, and thriving communities. Safe Streets has a great partnership with the City of Tacoma, Tacoma Police Department, Pierce County, Pierce County Sheriff's Department, Tacoma Pierce County health Department, Tacoma School District and Franklin Pierce School District. Through the involvement of neighborhood groups, Safe Streets is working with community members to create a "Whole Neighborhoods" initiative which focuses on youth and families within these neighborhoods.

YOUTH LEADING CHANGE - Youth Leading Change (YLC) mobilizes high school and middle school youth to impact their schools and communities where they live through engagement, community service, mentoring and service learning efforts aimed at promotion of leadership development and prevention. The YLC program is active in six high schools and three middle schools in Tacoma and Franklin Pierce School District. High School YLC chapters gain skills through weekly club meetings, monthly YLC meetings and a yearly 4-day intensive Leadership Academy. Middle school YLC chapters are assisted by YLC Advisors chosen from the high school to mentor the middle school students on leadership development, team building and prevention efforts at their schools. For 2018 we had 9 YLC chapters, 140 registered middle and high school student members, 3,507 YLC member hours volunteering for safe, healthy, thriving communities and 17 youth-led community action projects that impacted 3,385 people.

FAMILY, YOUTH & COMMUNITY OUTREACH & EDUCATION STRATEGIES PROGRAM-FYCOES is a new project in collaboration with the Pierce County Juvenile Court. It includes two core components: (1) direct intervention services to youth and families and (2) the Youth-Serving Agencies Network (YSAN). The goal of the direct intervention services is to reduce disproportionate minority contact with the Pierce County juvenile court by helping youth and their families build skills to manage emotions and anger. Services are targeted to male, African-American youth who are referred to the court on charges related to family/domestic violence. In 2018, a total of 18 youth and families engaged in and completed these services, of which 83% met program outcomes for increased skills and reduced aggression. YSAN is a systems change initiative that mobilizes positive youth development agencies that serve court-connected youth in order to improve effectiveness of our shared work. The YSAN leverages resources and relationships to increase capacity, coordination, and collaboration between agencies and maximize positive impact on youth. In 2018 the YSAN engaged 11 community agencies in this work.
