Organizations Filed Purposes:
Wolf Havens mission is to conserve and protect wolves and their habitat. We rescue and provide sanctuary for displaced, captive-born wolves; promote wolf restoration in historical ranges; and provide a variety of educational programs about wildlife.
SANCTUARY: SINCE 1982, WOLF HAVEN INTERNATIONAL HAS RESCUED AND PROVIDED LIFETIME SANCTUARY TO OVER 300 WOLVES IN NEED. MOST OF THE WOLVES HAVE BEEN RESCUED FROM PRIVATE OWNERSHIP, A PRACTICE THAT IS ILLEGAL IN SOME STATES, BUT DIFFICULT TO ENFORCE. OFTEN THE ANIMALS THAT ARE RESCUED HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED OR ABUSED OR ARE FACING DESTRUCTION. MANY CAPTIVE-BORN WOLVES ARE EUTHANIZED BY THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN MONTHS, WHEN THEY BEGIN TO REACH SEXUAL MATURITY. WOLF HAVEN PROVIDES A SAFE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT FOR THESE ANIMALS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THEIR LIVES.OUR ANIMALS RECEIVE THE BEST CARE POSSIBLE, WITH QUALITY FOOD, ENRICHMENT AND MEDICAL TREATMENT. EACH CIRCULAR ENCLOSURE IS FROM 1/3 ACRE TO 2 ACRES, WITH AN 8 FENCE AND 3 TIPPIN AND ADDITIONAL BARRIER UNDERGROUND. THIS SPECIFIC DESIGN TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE INCREDIBLE DIGGING INSTINCTS AND JUMPING SKILLS OF WOLVES, WHILE ALLOWING THEM SPACE TO FREELY MOVE ABOUT. THE RESIDENT WOLVES ARE TYPICALLY PAIRED, WITH A FEMALE AND MALE IN EACH ENCLOSURE, AND THEY USUALLY BOND FOR LIFE. ANIMAL CARE SPECIALISTS WALK THROUGH THE SANCTUARY BOTH EARLY MORNING AND LATE AFTERNOON. THEY VISUALLY CHECK THE WOLVES TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE HEALTHY AND MOVING AROUND AND MONITOR FOOD INTAKE. IF THERE IS ANY CONCERN ABOUT AN ANIMALS HEALTH, THE VETERINARIAN IS CALLED TO MAKE A VISIT. IF THE WOLF PRESENTS AN ISSUE THAT CANNOT BE TREATED IN-HOUSE, HE/SHE IS CAUGHT AND TAKEN TO THE VETERINARIAN FOR EXAMINATION. THE WOLVES ARE TREATED WITH RESPECT AND EVERY CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THEIR INNATE WILD NATURE WHICH HAS BEEN COMPROMISED BY THEIR PRIOR CAPTIVITY BY HUMANS.Wolf Haven also manages a satellite wolf sanctuary in Bridger, Montana called the McCleery Ranch. Thirty-five captive-born wolves live at the sanctuary and their care is overseen by Wendy Spencer, Wolf Havens Director of Operations. The wolves at the Montana location have had minimal human exposure, unlike many of the wolves at Wolf Havens sanctuary in Tenino, Washington. The Montana wolves do not do well with strangers so unnecessary human contact is not forced upon them. The Montana facility is closed to the public and the remaining wolves will not be allowed to continue breeding.Wolf Haven will arrange for cryopreservation to fulfill the Foundation's mission of preserving the DNA of the buffalo wolf lineage from 1920. The property will also be proposed as a future prerelease facility in support of the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan program.
EDUCATION: WOLF HAVEN INTERNATIONAL PROVIDES GUIDED WALKS THROUGH A SPECIFIED AREA OF OUR WOLF SANCTUARY AND OFFERS SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING TO THE PUBLIC. The course is taught by Dr. Mark Johnson of Global Wildlife Resources, a former veterinarian of Yellowstone National Park who travels the world presenting courses on humane, compassionate animal handling. Over the course of the instruction, the students learn humane methods for animal handling, chemical immobilization, monitoring vital signs and radio collar techniques. The Wildlife Handing course has been taught at the Tenino, Washington sanctuary location for 16 years.
CONSERVATION & PRAIRIE RESTORATION: WOLF HAVENS CONTINUED PARTICIPATION IN TWO SPECIES SURVIVAL PLAN (SSP) PROGRAMS ALLOWS FOR THE ONGOING PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF TWO HIGHLY ENDANGERED MAMMALS THE MEXICAN GRAY WOLF AND THE RED WOLF. WOLF HAVEN IS ONE OF ONLY THREE PRE-RELEASE FACILITIES IN THE U.S. FOR THE ENDANGERED MEXICAN GRAY WOLF. PRE-RELEASE ENCLOSURES ARE DESIGNED TO PREPARE WOLVES FOR LIFE AS A WILD WOLF. INTERACTION WITH HUMANS IS KEPT TO A MINIMUM AND MOST OBSERVATIONS ARE DONE BY REMOTE CAMERA. AS A PARTICIPANT IN TWO SSP PROGRAMS, WOLF HAVEN HAS PRODUCED FOUR LITTERS OF RED WOLF PUPS, NINE LITTERS OF MEXICAN GRAY PUPS AND RELEASED TWO PACKS OF MEXICAN WOLVES (11 WOLVES) INTO APACHE NATIONAL FOREST IN ARIZONA. SOME OF THE FIRST WOLVES RELEASED BACK INTO THE WILD, AFTER AN ABSENCE OF OVER 30 YEARS, CAME FROM WOLF HAVEN INTERNATIONAL. A FAMILY OF MEXICAN WOLVES FROM WOLF HAVEN WAS RELEASED INTO THE WILD IN MEXICO IN 2016.THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THE WOLF HAVEN PRAIRIE PROJECT IS RESTORATION OF ITS PRAIRIE AND STRENGTHENING ITS ROLE AS A HOST FOR RARE AND THREATENED NATIVE SPECIES. THIS PROPERTY IS ALSO A STEPPING STONE TO ADJACENT PRAIRIES. IT SERVES AS A MODEL DEMONSTRATION SITE FOR EFFECTIVE CONSERVATION ON FRAGMENTED PRAIRIE CONDUCTED THROUGH WORKING PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE CENTER FOR NATURAL LANDS MANAGEMENT, WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH & WILDLIFE, WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, USDA NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION SERVICE, U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE AND BLACK HILLS AUDUBON SOCIETY.
