THE Y OPERATES A LICENSED EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ONSITE FOR 101 AREA CHILDREN. THIS INCLUDES A FULL DAY PRESCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AGES 2.5 - 5 AND AN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN AGES KINDERGARTEN TO 5TH GRADE. THE STEM-BASED CURRICULUM FOSTERS EACH CHILD'S COGNITIVE, SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCES WHICH FOCUS ON ACHIEVEMENT, RELATIONSHIPS, AND BELONGING. EACH ACTIVITY IS OFFERED IN A PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY SAFE ENVIRONMENT CONSISTENT WITH EVIDENCE-BASED PRINCIPLES OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. EACH CHILD IS ENCOURAGED TO DEVELOP AT HIS OR HER OWN PACE BY ENCOURAGING SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND FREQUENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES.
THE WALLA WALLA Y EMPHASIZES WATER SAFETY AND DROWNING PREVENTION. IN 2019, 884 2ND GRADERS FROM SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE WALLA WALLA VALLEY PARTICIPATED IN THE Y'S FREE "LEARN TO SWIM" PROGRAM WHICH IS FUNDED THROUGH DONATIONS AND GRANT. AN ANNUAL APRIL POOLS DAY HIGHLIGHTS ADDITIONAL TRAINING AND WATER SAFETY RESOURCES FOR THE COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS FUN WATER ACTIVITIES, AND IS OFFERED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS.
