THE AGENCY IS ONE OF ELEVEN AREA AGENCIES ON AGING IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA PROVIDING ASSISTANCE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT, PLANNING AND ADMINISTRATION OF SERVICE PROGRAMS FOR THE ELDERLY. THE AGENCY'S SERVICE AREA INCLUDES CHARLOTTE, COLLIER, DESOTO, GLADES, HENDRY, LEE AND SARASOTA COUNTIES. THE AGENCY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPING AN AREA PLAN AND SUBGRANTING FEDERAL AND STATE FUNDS TO DIRECT PROVIDERS OF SERVICES FOR OLDER PERSONS TO ACHEIVE THE PLAN GOALS.
OLDER AMERICAN ACT - TITLE 3B, C1, C2, 3E - FOSTERS THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY BASED SYSTEMS OF SERVICE FOR OLDER PERSONS AND PROVIDES SUPPORTIVE SERVICES (MEALS, HOMEMAKING, PERSONAL CARE, ACCESS) ALONG WITH SERVICES TO CAREGIVERS. THIS ALSO INCLUDES MEETING NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF THE SENIORS UNDER TITLE C1 AND C2 BY PROVIDING NUTRITIONAL SERVICES IN A CONGREGATE MEAL SITE OR BY MEALS DELIVERED TO THE SENIORS HOME. IN 2018 OVER 2,090 CLIENTS RECEIVED SERVICES THROUGH THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT.
GENERAL REVENUE - CCE, HCE, ADI, RESPITE RELIEF - PROVIDES IN HOME SERVICES TO THE LOW INCOME, FRAIL SENIORS OVER AGE 60 WITH THE GOAL BEING TO REDUCE OR DELAY PREMATURE OR INAPPROPRIATE AND EXPENSIVE PLACEMENT OF OLDER PERSONS IN NURSING HOMES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS. 673 SENIORS WERE ABLE TO REMAIN IN THEIR OWN HOMES LONGER BY PARTICIPATING IN THESE PROGRAMS. BY HELPING A SENIOR REMAIN AT HOME THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE IS BETTER AND THE COST OF SUPPORT CARE IS LESS COSTLY.
THE VETERAN-DIRECTED HOME AND COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES PROGRAM SERVES VETERANS OF ANY AGE WHO ARE DETERMINED BY THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION TO BE AT RISK OF INSTITUTIONAL PLACEMENT. VETERANS MANAGE THEIR OWN FLEXIBLE SPENDING BUDGETS FOR THEIR PERSONAL CARE SERVICES- DECIDING FOR THEMSELVES WHAT MIX OF GOODS AND SERVICES WILL BEST MEET THEIR NEEDS, HIRING AND SUPERVISING THEIR OWN WORKERS, INCLUDING FAMILY AND FRIENDS, AND PURCHASING ITEMS OR SERVICES THAT WILL HELP THEM LIVE MORE INDEPENDENTLY. AS PART OF THIS PROGRAM, VETERANS AND THEIR CAREGIVER HAVE MORE ACCESS, CHOICE AND CONTROL OVER THEIR LONG TERM SERVICES. THIS APPROACH IS KNOWN AS "PARTICIPANT DIRECTION'. OVER 60 VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES WERE SERVED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM DURING 2018.
