Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART JACKSONVILLE, A CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA, COLLABORATIVELY SERVES THE JACKSONVILLE AND UNF COMMUNITIES THROUGH EXHIBITIONS, COLLECTIONS AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND PUBLICATIONS DESIGNED TO ENHANCE THE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON WORKS CREATED FROM 1960 TO THE PRESENT.

FOUNDED IN 1924, MOCA IS THE FIRST ORGANIZATION IN OUR COMMUNITY DEVOTED TO THE VISUAL ARTS. IN 2003, IT OPENED THE 60,000 SQUAREFOOT MUSEUM, THEATER, AND EDUCATION SPACE IT NOW OPERATES IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE. IN 2009, MOCA ENHANCED ITS COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING JACKSONVILLE WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY ARTS EDUCATION WHEN IT BECAME A CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA TO HOST SPECIAL LECTURES, COLLEGE LEVEL ART COURSES, AND SPECIAL FACULTY AND STUDENT EXHIBITIONS. THE MUSEUM CONTINUES TO BE A CORNERSTONE OF JACKSONVILLE'S DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION PLAN; ITS EXHIBITIONS AND PROGRAMS BRING NEW VISITORS TO THE CIVIC CORE YEAR ROUND.

THE MUSEUM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION OF NEARLY 1,000 WORKS OF ART FROM 1960 TO PRESENT, INCLUDES PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, PRINTMAKING, SCULPTURE, WORKS ON PAPER, AND NEW MEDIA. WITH OVER 500 ARTISTS REPRESENTED IN THE COLLECTION, MOCA JACKSONVILLE ENDEAVORS TO CREATE A PERMANENT COLLECTION OF SIGNIFICANT DEPTH, SCOPE, AND QUALITY TO USE FOR STUDY, SCHOLARLY RESEARCH, AND EXHIBITIONALL TOOLS THAT FOSTER AN EDUCATION, AWARENESS AND EXPERIENCE WITH CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ART. IN 2016, THE MUSEUM ADOPTED A NEW THEMATIC COLLECTING STRATEGY TO CHART THE PERMANENT COLLECTION'S ONGOING GROWTH AND INTERPRETATION. MOCA HOLDS A UNIQUE PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY AS EDUCATOR WITH AND THROUGH CONTEMPORARY ART. STANDARDS-BASED SCHOOL TOURS TAILORED TO EACH GRADE LEVEL FORM A MAJOR PORTION OF MOCA'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. MOCA OFFERS TOURS FOR PRE K THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL AS ADULTS. LED BY PROFESSIONAL MUSEUM EDUCATORS, MOCA'S MULTIFACETED TOUR PROGRAM EMPHASIZES THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND FOSTERS AN APPRECIATION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART. EDUCATION PROGRAMMING FOR K-12 INCLUDES:-VOICE OF THE PEOPLE: AN INNOVATIVE, LITERACY BASED EDUCATIONAL ARTS INITIATIVE THAT HONES CRITICAL THINKING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS AS IT DEVELOPS A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF CONTEMPORARY ART. FOURTH GRADERS WRITE AND RECORD AUDIO GUIDES FOR SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION. PRE AND POSTTESTING, USING THE STATE'S READING AND LITERACY RUBRIC, SHOW AN AVERAGE IMPROVEMENT OF 46%.-ART AVIATORS IS A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVE DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS (ASD) AND OTHER EXCEPTIONALITIES. WHILE CHILDREN WITH ASD STRUGGLE WITH VERBAL COMMUNICATION, SOCIAL RELATIONS, AND SENSORY DEVELOPMENT, CREATIVE ARTMAKING ACTIVITIES ENABLE THEM TO FOSTER NEW MEANS OF SELF EXPRESSION AND COMMUNICATION. -STEAM TOURS: MOCA'S SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATH (STEAM) TOURS ARE CURRICULUMBASED PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 1ST THROUGH 5TH. SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES ARE REQUIRED TO MAKE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF ART, SUCH AS THE CHEMICAL PROCESS EMPLOYED IN PHOTOGRAPHY.
