Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO IMPROVE PUBLIC EDUCATION FOR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN IN PALM BEACH AND MARTIN COUNTIES BY DEVELOPING, TESTING AND IMPLEMENTING NEW STRATEGIES FOR LEARNING IN CLASSROOMS, SCHOOLS AND NEIGHBORHOODS AND TO SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS UNAVAILABLE AS PART OF THR REGULAR CURRICULUM.
SUPPORT FOR EXECUTIVE COACHING MENTORING AND CURRICULUM AUDIT - $229,891.A GRANT TO PROVIDE EXECUTIVE COACHING, MENTORING, AND PLANNING SUPPORTS FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE EXECUTIVE TEAM WAS EXECUTED, ALONG WITH A CURRICULUM AUDIT THAT INFORMED THEIR RECENT READING BOOK ADOPTION AND IS CURRENTLY INFORMING THE SDPBC'S CURRENT STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS.
PREVENTING THE SUMMER READING SLIDE - $190,142 HIGH-POVERTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVED GRANTS OF UP TO $10,000 TO ASSIST IN ADDRESSING THE SUMMER READING SLIDE BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO PRINT RICH ENVIRONMENTS. THE INTENT IS TO PROVIDE CHILDREN WITH UP TO TEN, SELF-SELECTED "JUST RIGHT" BOOKS TO READ OVER THE SUMMER. DUE TO CHALLENGES POSED BY THE PANEDEMIC, SCHOOLS WERE NOT ALWAYS TO OFFER OPPORTUNITES FOR CHILDREN TO EXCHANGE BOOKS OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS. SCHOOLS STILL OFFERED OPPORTUNITIES TO DISCUSS BOOKS, BUT THE CHATS WERE HELD ONLINE. THE GOAL IS TO HELP CHILDREN MAINTAIN THEIR INDIVIDUAL READING LEVELS. A FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY EVALUATION OF SUMMER SLIDE GRANTEES REPORTS THAT 88% OF THE STUDENTS WHO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT UP TO TEN HIGH-INTEREST, "JUST RIGHT" BOOKS TO READ OVER THE SUMMER EITHER INCREASED OR DID NOT CHANGE THEIR INDEPENTENT READING SCORE WHEN RETURNING TO SCHOOL IN AUGUST 2019. RESULTS FOR THE 2020 PROJECTS WERE INCONSISTENT, AS IT WAS DIFFICULT TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO PRINT IN A TIMELY MANNER AS IN THE PAST. SCHOOLS SUBSTITUTED DIGITAL PRINT WHEN POSSIBLE, BUT THE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF STUDENT CHOICE AND VOICE WERE LOST.
SUPPORTING EFFORTS TO EXPAND INQUIRY- AND PROBLEM-BASED INSTRUCTION - $78,145 TWO HIGH-POVERTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS RECEIVED SUPPORT TO INCREASE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT ACROSS CONTENT AREAS THROUGH A VARIETY OF PROJECT/PROBLEM AND INQUIRY-BASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THE GOAL IS TO BUILD FACULTY CAPACITY IN STEM INSTRUCTION THROUGH PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, AND TO TRANSFORM SCHOOL CULTURES FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING. WHILE THE PANDEMIC POSED A CHALLENGE TO IMPLEMENTATION, SCHOOLS DID THEIR BEST TO CONTNUE TO OFFER PROJECT/PROBLEM LEARNING WHEN FEASIBLE.
