Area Stage Company (ASC), established in 1989, is an award-winning professional theatre company that for 30 years has staged provocative, world-class theatre productions. Founded by John and Maria Rodaz, ASC originated in Miami Beach as one of the pioneers of the Miami arts community that surged in the 1980's on Lincoln Road when the once high-end shopping area had become a dilapidated strip of empty storefronts. Since its inception, ASC has presented a mix of contemporary plays and original new works, producing numerous world premieres, quickly "changing the perceptionand standards of what South Florida's theatres can and should be, according to the Sun-Sentinel, which described the organization as "one of the most influential theatres in the region."
The ASC Conservatory serves some 10,000 Miami-Dade students yearly via direct instruction during classes, productions, and internships, and indirectly through performances, outreach, and field trip programs. Programming includes an extensive and rigorous schedule of year-round courses, intensives, and productions offering learning opportunities in acting, singing, dance, audition technique, musicianship, technical theatre, stage management, and directing.
The Inclusion Theatre Project, for students with developmental disabilities is run in tandem with the Conservatory. Students work on basic theatrical concepts through acting and music games, and showcase their work in 2-3 fully-produced productions each year. Additionally ITP students enjoy performance opportunities at many outreach and community events such as the Coral Gables Arts Festival, the All Kids Included Festival ArtsLaunch, and more.
