HOPE, INCS MISSION IS TO FIGHT HOUSING DISCRIMINATION IN MIAMI-DADE, AND BROWARD COUNTIES, AND TO PROMOTE EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF FLORIDA.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH SERVICES, are designed to ensure that the general public and protected classes become knowledgeable concerning fair housing laws, and the remedies available to adress fair housing rights violations. The initiative also includes private housing industry provider education programs structured to furnish developers, real estate brokers, property managers, financial institutions, and the media/ advertising industry with the most current information necessary to fully comply with fair housing laws. Assistance is provided to local government jurisdictions in meeting their mandated responsibility to affirmatively further fair housing. The initiative has been expanded to include an educational campaign designed to promote awareness of predatory and discriminatory lending practices directed at protected classes.
PRIVATE ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES include the intake and investigation Testing of individual housing discrimination complaints, as well as exposing patterns and practices of housing discrimination. This initiative, while addressing complaints of fair housing violations, has assisted residents in achieving equal access to housing of their choice. Private enforcement also helps local governmental jurisdictions administer housing and community development programs in a manner that furthers the purpose of the fair housing act, and promotes fair housing choices to its residents. To date, HOPE has been instrumental in the recovery of approximately 13 million in settlements from discrimination. During 28 years of existence, we have responded to more than 4,250 fair housing complaints, and have trained over 2,500 volunteer testers to effectively and impartially gather the evidence necessary to substantiate allegations of discrimination.
COMMUNITY RELIEF INITIATIVE began as a result of test done on foreclosed properties REO test to examine the disparities between the ways bank-owned foreclosures are maintained, and marketed according to the predominant races, or ethnicities of the areas in which the properties are located. The resulting disparities discovered lead to HOPE receiving an 1.42 million restricted settlement award to promote home ownership, neighborhood stabilization, property rehabilitation, and development in communities of color. Through fiscal 2016, HOPE has completed at least 2 home rehabilitation projects making life easier for persons with disabilities, and has provided down payment assistance grants to 41 low to moderate income, first time homebuyers.
