TO PROVIDE COMPETITIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUALS AND TO SPONSOR AND/OR DONATE TO PROJECTS INTENDED TO ENRICH THE CULTURAL, INTELLECTUAL, EMOTIONAL, OR PHYSICAL INTERESTS OF THE RESIDENTS OF BENTLEY VILLAGE OR THAT ADVANCE THE INTERESTS OF THE FOUNDATION IN THE GREATER BENTLEY VILLAGE COMMUNITY AND SOUTH WEST FLORIDA.
AWARDS PROGRAM: AFTER TAKING OVER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BENTLEY VILLAGE THRIFT SHOP, AN ALL-VOLUNTEER ENDEAVOR OF NEARLY 25 YEARS IN JANUARY 2018, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ADOPTED A NEW AWARDS PROGRAM TO ASSURE LEGITIMATE AND EFFECTIVE USE OF THESE FUNDS AS WELL AS OTHER AWARDED FOUNDATION FUNDS. 80-PLUS VOLUNTEERS AND THE 10-MEMBER LEADERSHIP TEAM OPERATE THE THRIFT SHOP, AN EXCELLENT ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITY. SALES FOR THE YEAR TOTALED $72,872. THE GRANT PROGRAM FOR THE THRIFT SHOP INCOME WAS MADE AVAILABLE INITIALLY FOR RESIDENT GROUPS AND ACTIVITY CLUBS OPERATING UNDER THE RESIDENT COUNCIL UMBRELLA, VI DEPARTMENTS DIRECTLY SERVING BENTLEY RESIDENTS, AND ENTITIES RECOMMENDED FOR GRANTS BY FRIENDS OF BENTLEY VILLAGE, A STANDING COMMITTEE OF THE RESIDENT COUNCIL. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O) COMMITTEES OF THE FOUNDATION MAY ALSO REQUEST SPECIAL AWARDS FOR FORMAL PROJECTS IN ADDITION TO THOSE ALREADY IN THEIR AWARD BUDGETS DURING THE YEAR. FINAL APPROVAL OF ALL AWARDS IS MADE VIA FORMAL VOTE OF THE TRUSTEES BASED ON APPROPRIATENESS FOR THE TARGET POPULATIONS AND IN KEEPING WITH THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION AND PURPOSES AND AVAILABLE FUNDING. THE PROGRAM IS PROVING SUCCESSFUL. OVER $48,000 WAS GRANTED FROM THRIFT SHOP SALES TO 18 GRANTEES PROVIDING CULTURAL, INTELLECTUAL, EMOTIONAL, THERAPEUTIC OR PHYSICAL BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS. THE AWARD PROGRAM WILL EXPAND IN 2020. AN ENDOWMENT FOR THE GRANT PROGRAM WAS STARTED IN 2018.
SCHOLARSHIPS: IN COLLABORATION WITH THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY (CFCC- SEE SCH I} AND USING FUNDS RAISED BY THE FOUNDATION, 13 RENEWABLE SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED IN 2019: 4 IN MAY AT $3,500 EACH AND 9 IN DECEMBER AT $4,000 EACH. RECIPIENTS WERE ALL EMPLOYEES OR DEPENDENTS OF EMPLOYEES OF VI AT BENTLEY VILLAGE, A NAPLES CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY. ALL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS ARE DISBURSED FROM A DESIGNATED ACCOUNT UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF CCFC DIRECTLY TO THE LEARNING INSTITUTIONS PER-A WRITTEN AGREEMENT BETWEEN CCFC AND THE FOUNDATION. 100% OF THIS YEAR'S FUNDS CAME FROM THE FOUNDATION. AWARDEES WERE SELECTED VIA APPLICATIONS SCORED ON A MATRIX DEVELOPED COOPERATIVELY BY THE TWO ORGANIZATIONS. AWARDEES MAY RECEIVE ANNUAL RENEWALS UNTIL THEIR ORIGINAL COURSES OF STUDY ARE COMPLETED. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)SERVING 33 PARTICIPANTS IN 2019, OUR "BENTLEY WINGS" SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS THE LARGEST PROGRAM ADMINISTERED BY CCCF. MANY AWARDEES HAVE GRADUATED. OUR PROGRAM IS ALSO THE ONLY ONE TO GUARANTEE ITS STUDENTS ANNUAL RENEWAL AVAILABILITY. AN ENDOWMENT FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WAS STARTED IN 2018 AND WAS INCREASED IN 2019. AT 12/31/19, THE FOUNDATION HAS COMMITTED $340,888 TO SUPPORT OUR CURRENT SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS TO THE COMPLETION OF THEIR COURSES OF STUDY.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS: SPECIAL PROGRAM ARE SUPPORTED DIRECTLY AND THROUGH AWARDS. 2019'S ACTIVITIES WERE IN FOUR BASIC AREAS:MUSIC AND MUSIC THERAPY: 2019 PROGRAMS CONTINUED FOR THE MEMORY CARE UNITS AND FOR LONG TERM CARE PATIENTS OF THE BENTLEY CARE CENTER AND ASSISTED LIVING AS WELL AS OTHER RESIDENTS WHO CAN BENEFIT. WORKING COOPERATIVELY WITH THE BOWER SCHOOL OF MUSIC AT FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY, THE FOUNDATION EXPANDED PROGRAMS BENEFITING RESIDENTS WITH ADVANCED COGNITIVE DISORDERS AND THOSE BEING REHABILITATED AFTER SERIOUS INJURY OR ILLNESS.(CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O) BASED ON CONTINUING RESEARCH AND CONSULTATION, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES SUPPORTS A FULL-TIME ON-CAMPUS PROGRAM PROVIDED BY INTERNS OF THE SCHOOL AND THEIR BENTLEY STAFF SUPERVISORS IN THE FORM OF EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS, ADDITIONAL RESOURCES, AND THE CLINICAL SUPPORTS OF A PART-TIME A CONTRACTUAL CERTIFIED MUSIC THERAPIST FOR NEEDED FOR PALLIATIVE RELIEF AND REHABILITATION. THE FOUNDATION MAINTAINS HIGH-QUALITY PIANOS IN THE CARE VENUES AND A TRANSPORTABLE DIGITAL PIANO FOR DIRECT MUSIC THERAPY, RESIDENT RECREATION AND ENHANCEMENT OF GROUP THERAPY PROGRAMING AND CLASSES. WE ALSO SUPPLY MATERIALS FOR ART THERAPY. A CHIME CHOIR AND A DRUMMING GROUP CONTINUE. THE EXPANDED PROGRAMS OFFER A SIDE-BENEFIT OF THERAPIST COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE FACILITIES PROMOTING SHARING TALENTS AND RESOURCES. IN BOTH CENTERS, PARTICIPATION OF FGCU STUDENTS PROVIDED CROSS-GENERATIONAL CONTACT AND COMMUNICATION - ANOTHER FOUNDATION GOAL. PROGRAMS THAT COMBINE FORMAL EXERCISE AND MUSIC FOR SEATED PARTICIPANTS ARE MAINTAINED IN BOTH RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES. IN ADDITION, THE FOUNDATION ORGANIZES AND SUPPORTS PROFESSIONAL MUSIC PERFORMANCES TWICE A MONTH FOR THOSE IN INDEPENDENT LIVING AND OFFERS AT LEAST ONE VILLAGE-WIDE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE MONTHLY REACHING OVER 250 RESIDENTS EACH TIME. MINDFULNESS TRAINING: A SERIES BEGUN IN 2017, LED BY ANGELA TARQUINI-SANDERS OF MINDFULMINDZ, CONTINUED INTO 2019 WITH SELECTED PROGRAMS.THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE PROGRAM: PROFESSIONAL MASSAGE THERAPY SERVICES WERE EXPANDED IN 2019 TO ADDITIONAL LIFE CARE RESIDENTS AT THE CARE CENTER BY A LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPIST [LMT] WHO HAS KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN PROVIDING THESE SERVICES TO A SENIOR POPULATION. THE INDIVIDUAL CHAIR MASSAGES ASSIST IN REDUCING THE PREDICTABLE ADVERSE EFFECTS OF TOUCH DEPRIVATION AMONG SENIORS LIVING IN SKILLED NURSING SETTINGS.RENAISSANCE ACADEMY LECTURES: IN LATE 2019, THE FOUNDATION CONTRACTED WITH FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY TO OFFER A FULL LECTURES SERIES IN ITS ADULT LEARNING PROGRAM AT BENTLEY VILLAGE IN 2020.
