To enhance the lives of our students and families by improving their literary skills.
Children and Parents Reading Together: 4 year old children and their parents are taught to read by LVCC tutors in Collier County Public Schools. The children are selected by school staff and the session runs for 8 weeks every semester. The tutors work with both child and parent teaching the parent how to read to their child and instilling in them the importance of reading to their child to help them through school. In one year, approximately 300 children and parents will attend the program. All children are Kindergarten ready at the end of the session. Children keep every book they read, so by the end of the semester, they have a small library of 8 books.
One on one tutoring, students and tutors meet once or twice a week for at least 1.5 hours and work together on their English. Students are at different levels of English and are tutored accordingly. Students are 55% Hispanic, 25% Haitian, 20% from Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Far East, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey. All students remain in the program for at least one year and many remain longer. All students improve their English by at least 2 levels of English. Small group classes are also operated at the LVCC facility at local churches.
Citizenship: Students attend a 6 week course to prepare themselves for the citizenship test. All instruction is completed by LVCC tutors and all materials are supplied by LVCC. There has been a 100% success rate and over 550 students have become citizens through LVCC.
