Organizations Filed Purposes: TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THOSE IMPACTED BY BREAST CANCER BY SUPPORTING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, COMMUNITY EDUCATION, PUBLIC POLICY THROUGH ADVOCACY, AND COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS.

THE CARES PROJECT FOCUSES ON ONE-ON-ONE AND SMALL GROUP CONTACTS IN COMMUNITIES THAT ARE MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED AND/OR HAVE A HIGHER LEVEL OF LATE STAGE DIAGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER THAT THE AVERAGE IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. THE PROGRAM REACHED MORE THAN 8,000 WOMEN AND MEN IN JUST ITS FIRST YEAR. THE MASS PROGRAM (MAMMOGRAMS AFTER SUNDAY SERVICES) IS A SECOND OUTREACH EDUCATION PROGRAM PRIMARILY BUT NOT EXCLUSIVERLY TO THE AFRICAN=AMERICAN COMMUNITY THROUGH CHURCHES. DURING 2019-20, THE FOCUS WAS EXPANDED BEYOND SOUTH FLORIDA TO CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST FLORIDA. ALTHOUGH COVID CURTAILED ITS IN-PERSON PRESENTATIONS, COVID PERMITTING, THE IN-PERSON PROGRAMS WILL RESUME IN BOTH OF THESE NEEDED AREAS.

THE FLORIDA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS STATEWIDE. EDUCATION GRANTS ARE AWARDED IN SUPPORT OF INNOVATIVE PROJECTS IN FOUR PRIORITY AREAS: EDUCATE WOMEN IN THE AREAS WHERE THEY NEED TO BECOME PROACTIVE ADVOCATES FOR THEIR OWN BREAST HEALTH THROUGH EDUCATION WORKSHOPS; PROVIDE EDUCATION TO BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS, THEIR FAMILIES AND ADVOCATES ON LIFE AFTER OR WITH CANCER, INCLUDING THE "TRANSITION PHASE" FROM ACTIVE TREATMENT TO SURVIVORSHIP; PROVIDE EDUCATION ON BREAST HEALTH TO YOUNG WOMEN AND MEN WITH A FOCUS ON MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE AGES; AND CREATE AND PROVIDE A METHOD OF EDUCATION, ON LATE STAGE BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS, THAT WILL HELP REDUCE THE PERCENTAGE OF THESE DIAGNOSES, IN THE AREAS THAT EXCEED THE STATE OF FLORIDA AVERAGE.SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH GRANTS ARE AWARDED TO INSTITUTIONS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA WHO SUBMIT PROPOSALS ON INNOVATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MAKE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON BREAST CANCER. THE GRANTS MUST BE IN ONE OF 5 AREAS OF RESEARCH: BASIC, CLINICAL, AND TRANSLATIONAL BREAST CANCER RESEARCH; EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF BREAST CANCER; RESEARCH ON POSSIBLE LINKS BETWEEN BREAST CANCER AND THE ENVIRONMENT; PSYCHOIMMUNOLOGICAL RESEARCH; AND INNOVATIVE AWARDS AND IDEA GRANTS.DURING THE 2019-20 PERIOD, FIVE RESEARCH GRANTS OF APPROXIMATELY $100,000 EACH WERE APPROVED AND FUNDED IN JUNE 2020 WITH A GRANT PROJECT PERIOD OF JULY 1, 2020 TO JUNE 30, 2021. 10 GRANTS FOR EDUCATION WERE AWARDED FOR A TOTAL OF MORE THAN $82,000.

THE FLORIDA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES RECOGNIZED THAT THOSE PERSONS GOING THROUGH OR N NEED OF ACTIVE TREATMENT NEED ASSISTANCE IN COVERING THE COST OF BASIC LIVING EXPENSES. THE BOARD RECOGNIZED THAT THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY WOMEN WHO FIND IT DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO AFFORD TO 3D MAMMOGRAM SCREENING WHEN IT IS ORDERED BY THEIR PHYSICIAN. DURING 2019-20, THE FLORIDA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION PROVIDED 3 GRANTS TO BROWARD COUNTY HOSPITALS FOR A TOTAL OF $29,862 FOR 3D MAMMOGRAM SCREENINGS AND 10 GRANTS IN THE CENTRAL FLORIDA AREA FOR A TOTAL OF $23,000 FOR BASIC LIVING EXPENSES.
