Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE PURPOSE OF THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF FLORIDA IS TO PROMOTE POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY THROUGH INFORMED AND ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT AND TO ACT ON SELECTED GOVERNMENT ISSUES. THE LEAGUE SHALL NOT SUPPORT OR OPPOSE ANY POLITICAL PARTY OR ANY CANDIDATE.
THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF FLORIDA IS A NON-PARTISAN POLITICAL ORGANIZATION WHICH ENCOURAGES INFORMED, ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF CITIZENS IN GOVERNMENT AND INFLUENCES PUBLIC POLICY THROUGH EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY.
ADVOCACY EFFORTS FOCUSED ON PROVIDING STATE LEGISLATORS, THEIR STAFF, ORGANIZATION MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF BILLS PROPOSED FOR THE 2019 AND 2020 SESSIONS AND PROVIDING ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS THAT WOULD ADVANCE THE MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION AND ADDRESS LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES. LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES FOR EACH SESSION ARE IDENTIFIED BY LOCAL LEAGUE MEMBERS AND CONSOLIDATED SO THAT, STATE-WIDE, THE ORGANIZATION SPEAKS WITH ONE VOICE. MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN TWO-DAY EVENTS AT THE STATE CAPITOL IN APRIL 2019 AND FEBRUARY 2020 TO EMPHASIZE THE LEAGUE PRIORITY POSITIONS. LEAGUE MEMBERS STATE-WIDE ALSO RECEIVE ALERTS SO THAT THEY MAY CONTACT THEIR DISTRICT LEGISLATOR AND LEADERSHIP TO REINFORCE EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY EFFORTS FOR PRIORITY POSITIONS.
VOTING RIGHTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A PRIORITY OF THE ORGANIZATION. IN NOVEMBER 2018 VOTERS IN FLORIDA APPROVED AMENDMENT 4 TO THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO PROVIDE A PATH FOR FORMER FELONS TO HAVE THEIR VOTING RIGHTS RESTORED. DURING 2019 THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE CONSIDERED AND ENACTED LEGISLATION TO IMPLEMENT THE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THAT SIGNIFICANTLY RESTRICTED THE ABILITY OF RETURNING CITIZENS TO HAVE THEIR VOTING RIGHTS RESTORED. THE ORGANIZATION RECEIVED A GRANT TO HELP EDUCATE STATE LEGISLATORS, THEIR STAFF, LEAGUE MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC ABOUT HOW THE IMPLEMENTATING LEGISLATION WOULD IMPACT THE PROCESS FOR VOTING RIGHTS RESTORATION. AFTER THE RESTRICTIVE LEGISLATION WAS APPROVED BY THE LEGISLATURE AND SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR, THE ORGANIZATION JOINED LIKE MINDED ORGANIZATIONS TO CHALLENGE IN COURT THE STATUTE IMPLEMENTING 2018 AMENDMENT 4. ATTORNEYS REPRESENTING THE ORGANIZATION IN COURT DID NOT CHARGE FOR SERVICES RENDERED, SO THERE ARE NO EXPENSES REPORTED FOR THIS ACTIVITY. THE ORGANIZATION'S ACTIONS IN THE LEGAL CHALLENGE WERE UNDERTAKEN BY VOLUNTEER BOARD MEMBERS.
LEAGUE MEMBERS GATHERED IN NAPLES FOR A TWO DAY CONVENTION. THE PROGRAM FEATURED NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES AND MULTIPLE ISSUE FOCUSED SESSIONS TO EDUCATE MEMBERS ON STATE-WIDE ISSUES. WORKSHOPS PREPARED ATTENDEES TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE EDUCATORS AND ADVOCATES. ORGANIZATION OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS WERE ELECTED FOR TWO-YEAR TERMS. PRESENTATIONS ON PROGRAM UPDATES WERE APPROVED TO GUIDE FUTURE ORGANIZATION ACTIVITIES. DIRECTIONS TO THE BOARD ON SPECIFIC TOPICS WERE ALSO PRESENTED BY MEMBERSHIP. THIS PROGRAM HELPS THE ORGANIZATION TO CONTINUE TO IDENTIFY AND ACT ON THE PRIORITIES SUPPORTED BY STATE-WIDE MEMBERS. EXPENSES AND REVENUE ARE SHARED WITH THE RELATED ORGANIZATION LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF FLORIDA EDUCATION FUND INC.
