Our mission is to provide medical, surgical and interventional cardiac services for children who are affected by congenital and acquired heart diseases, and to establish Centers of excellence for pediatric Heart Surgery within our host of countries.
In 2019, the Caribbean Heart Menders Association continued to engage in needs assessment with the leadership of the Bustamante Hospital to identify training and developmental needs of facilitys nursing personnel. This was borne out of the high attrition rate of clinicians previously trained to provide cardiovascular care to children in the open heart unit. However, these plans were delayed due to local infection control issues which adversely impacted operations at the hospital. Notwithstanding the organizations president and education coordinator travelled to Jamaica in April to participate in the official opening of the dedicated pediatric cardiac center on the campus of Bustamante Hospital for Children. During that visit we participated in two on-site planning meetings with other stakeholders as well as officers from the Ministry of Health in efforts to plan and organize other activities aimed at strengthening the cardiac program. The focus on staff development was identified as a critical step to realize the goal ofproviding resources to enable performing a minimum of 200 open heart surgeries in 2020. Cost of travel wasLocally, nurses within the organization participated in free blood pressure screening for residents within our geographical area.
