NAMI (NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS) BROWARD COUNTY, INC. IS A 501(C)3 NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, FORMED IN 1982 AND IS AFFILIATED WITH NAMI NATIONAL AND NAMI FLORIDA, TO PROVIDE SUPPORT, EDUCATION, ADVOCACY AND RESEARCH TO INDIVIDUALS WITH SEVERE AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS.
NAMI BROWARD COUNTY SERVES AS AN ADVOCATE AT THE COUNTY, STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS FOR NON-DISCRIMINATORY ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE, HOUSING, EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. OUR SERVICES ARE FOCUSED ON THE GOALS OF EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS, WORKING TO ELIMINATE THE STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND ADVOCATING FOR INCREASED FUNDING FOR RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSES AND TREATMENT OF MENTAL ILLNESS. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH SERVICES, NOT LIMITED TO, PEER-TO-PEER EDUCATION AND SUPPORT, FAMILY-TO-FAMILY EDUCATION AND SUPPORT, SPEAKER MEETINGS, CONSUMER SOCIALS, EDUCATION TO PROFESSIONALS, AND AN ADVOCACY GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS THAT SERVE THE BROADER MENTAL HEALTH COMMUNITY.LISTED BELOW ARE SOME OF THE PROGRAMS WE HAVE WORKED ON:35 COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS240 CONNECTION SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS10 IOOV MEETING36 FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS7 ENDING THE SILENT SESSIONS3 F2F CLASSES, 1 FAF 36 IN TOTAL3 P2P CLASSES 2 MHFA FOR ADULTS TRAINING4 GUARDIAN ADVOCATE TRAININGS9 SPEAKER MEETING6 NAMI PRESENTATIONSOVER 2500 FAMILY CONTACTED NAMI FOR HELP, VIA PHONE, ONLINE OR IN-PERSONWE ADDED 2 CONNECTION LOCATIONS, ONE IOOV AND A 2 NEW FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPSOUR FAMILY-TO-FAMILY PROGRAM HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO INCLUDE A SPANISH VERSION OF THE PROGRAM TO MEET THE NEED OF OUR SPANISH SPEAKING POPULATION AND WE HAVE ADDED FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPS TO REACH A BROADER RANGE OF RESIDENTS. NAMI'S NEW HOPE OFFERS RECREATION AND GROUP ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 45, WHO ARE LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. NAMI BROWARD COUNTY OFFERS 3 TRAININGS PER YEAR FOR GUARDIAN ADVOCATES AND COORDINATES THE ASSIGNMENT OF THESE ADVOCATES WITH OUR BAKER ACT RECEIVING HOSPITALS. WE ALSO ADDED 4 MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAININGS, AN EVIDENCE-BASED INTERNATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR FAMILIES AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. THESE TRAININGS PROVIDE A CRUCIAL NEED IN DEVELOPING THE CAPACITY IN BROWARD COUNTY FOR THE SERVICES OF GUARDIAN ADVOCATES AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. FOR THE YEAR 2019 NAMI BROWARD COUNTY HAVE REACHED AND SERVED OVER 3,500 ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITHIN THE MENTAL HEALTH COMMUNITY.
