SARASOTA PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA CONCERT SEASON - THE PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA IS ONE OF AMERICA'S LEADING REGIONAL ORCHESTRAS PERFORMING A WIDE RANGE OF CLASSICAL, POPS, AND CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERTS. USUALLY PERFORMING FOR MORE THAN 88,000 PEOPLE AT OVER 100 LIVE MUSICAL PERFORMANCES EACH 36 WEEK SEASON, THE ORCHESTRA WAS FORCED TO CANCEL 20 PERFORMANCES BEGINNING MID-MARCH 2020 DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC RELATED SHUTDOWN. OVER THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON, THE ORCHESTRA SHIFTED TO AN ONLINE PLATFORM, MUSIC MOVES US, WITH 38 MUSICAL VIGNETTES FILMED BY MUSICIANS IN THEIR HOMES AND OFFERED AT NO CHARGE ON THE ORCHESTRA'S WEBSITE, GARNERING 55,827 VIEWS. THE SEASON CULMINATED IN A SYNCHRONIZED VIDEO OF ORCHESTRA MUSICIANS PERFORMING BEETHOVEN 7 FROM THEIR HOMES. THE MUSIC MOVES US WEBSITE WAS SELECTED FOR INCLUSION IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.
SARASOTA MUSIC FESTIVAL - THE SARASOTA MUSIC FESTIVAL IS ONE OF THE PREMIER TEACHING FESTIVALS FOCUSED ON CHAMBER MUSIC IN THE UNITED STATES. THROUGH A COMPETITIVE PROCESS, THE FESTIVAL ADMITS 62 OF THE MOST TALENTED COLLEGE-AGED, PRE-PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS TO PARTICIPATE IN THREE WEEKS OF MASTER CLASSES AND COACHING SESSIONS, ALONG WITH PUBLIC ORCHESTRAL AND CHAMBER PERFORMANCES. THE INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED FACULTY ARTISTS TEACH AND PERFORM. DUE TO THE GLOBAL COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE FESTIVAL WAS CANCELLED FOR JUNE 2020. FESTIVAL FELLOWS AND FACULTY, LED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR JEFFERY KAHANE, CAME TOGETHER VIRTUALLY TO CREATE 28 VIDEO RECORDINGS WHICH WERE PRESENTED ON THE ORCHESTRA'S WEBSITE AND VIEWED OVER 11,000 TIMES VIA THE MUSIC MOVES US WEB PLATFORM.
FOR 61 YEARS SARASOTA ORCHESTRA HAS SPONSORED A YOUTH ORCHESTRA PROGRAM CURRENTLY CONSISTING OF EIGHT ORCHESTRAS, FIVE STRING ORCHESTRAS, ONE WIND BAND AND TWO FULL ORCHESTRAS. YOUTH ORCHESTRAS MEET ONCE A WEEK FROM SEPTEMBER THROUGH APRIL AND PRESENT SIX CONCERTS THAT ARE FREE TO THE PUBLIC. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, YOUTH ORCHESTRA WEEKLY PROGRAMS WERE CANCELLED MID-MARCH 2020 THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE SPRING. SARASOTA ORCHESTRA ALSO PRESENTS A SUMMER MUSIC CAMP FOR TWO WEEKS EACH JULY. DUE TO THE ONGOING PANDEMIC CRISIS, THE IN-PERSON SUMMER MUSIC CAMP WAS SHIFTED TO A FREE ONLINE PROGRAM OVER FOUR WEEKS CONSISTING OF TWENTY EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS OFFERING A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION ON A NUMBER OF MUSICAL TOPICS. THESE VIDEOS RECEIVED NEARLY 2,000 VIEWS DURING JULY. TO INSURE ALL STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND OUR PROGRAMS, SARASOTA ORCHESTRA PROVIDES TUITION, PRIVATE LESSON, SUMMER CAMP AND COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS. NEEDY STUDENTS ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BORROW INSTRUMENTS FROM THE ORCHESTRA. OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE YOUNG PERSON'S CONCERT WHICH ENGAGES FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS FROM SARASOTA AND MANATEE SCHOOLS. THIS INCLUDES AN IN-SCHOOL PREPARATION CURRICULUM GUIDE AND CULMINATES IN A CONCERT HELD AT A PROFESSIONAL CONCERT VENUE BY THE PROFESSIONAL SARASOTA ORCHESTRA. THE CURRICULUM FOR THESE CONCERTS IS IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE FLORIDA AND NATIONAL EDUCATION STANDARDS. OTHER OUTREACH PROGRAMS INCLUDE ORCHESTRA MUSICIANS PERFORMING AND COACHING IN THE SCHOOLS AND OTHER COMMUNITY VENUES. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY MEMBERS SERVED BY THE SARASOTA ORCHESTRA EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING IS MORE THAN 15,000.
