Key Chorale, the Suncoast's premier symphonic chorus, is dedicated to transforming lives through innovative programming, artistic excellence, educational outreach and service to the community.
For the 2019/2020 season, Key Chorale performed for a combined audience of over 7,300 before the season was abruptly curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chamber Singers kicked off the season in October with The Gospel Experience in collaboration with the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. In late November, the full Chorale performed the Winter Dreams program in collaboration with the Sarasota Ballet, followed by three performances of a Holiday Pops concert with the Venice Symphony in December. In January, the Chamber Singers presented Grassical joined by the DePue Brothers Band. Haydns Creation was performed at two concerts in February. Marchs performances of the 10th anniversary of Cirque des Voix, our unique collaboration with the Circus Arts Conservatory, along with Mays Tomorrows Voices Today (in partnership with the Sarasota County Public Schools) were cancelled due to the pandemic.
Student Scholars As an outgrowth of the Tomorrows Voices Today collaboration with Sarasota County Public Schools, Key Chorale began a more intensive Student Scholar Program for exceptionally gifted juniors and seniors pursuing music after high school. These students must apply, audition and then be accepted to sing a full performance season with Key Chorale. The Student Scholars receive private voice lessons and mentoring on every aspect of professional musicianship, from auditions to resume-building. The Scholars also prepare solos and perform in a separate recital attended by Key Chorale patrons. Sixteen Student Scholars completed the program in 2019/2020. Total expenses, including in-kind donations and indirect costs, were at least $1,750 per student, or $28,000 for the sixteen Student Scholars.
Community Outreach - Off-Key Chorale, in partnership with Sarasotas Neuro Challenge Foundation, is a choral group composed of people living with Parkinsons disease, family members, caregivers and volunteer singers from Key Chorale. Where Are My Keys Chorale, in conjunction with Jewish Family & Childrens Services, is a similar program for those suffering from Alzheimers. Visible Men Academy (VMA) is a tuition free charter school for at-risk boys in grades K through 5 in Bradenton, Florida. Through Key Chorales partnership with VMA, Key Chorale singers and educators conduct hands-on music activities with students, culminating in a final performance for family and friends. With the advent of the pandemic, which prohibited live rehearsals of the Off-Key and Where Are My Keys Chorales, Key Chorale launched its online Come Together Choir, recording 6 episodes of rehearsals which could be viewed remotely.
