Organizations Filed Purposes: (1) To negotiate for good working wages and good quality of work life for members.(2) To work for continuous improvement of instruction and related service for every child in Sarasota County.(3) To encourage the adoption of ethical practices and personnel policies to assure the highest standards possible.(4) To enable members to speak with a common voice on matters pertaining to public education.(5) To work to eliminate all forms of bias.(6) To work to obtain and protect civil and human rights of all school employees.(7) To promote a better understanding of issues and objectives of school employee rights.(8) To promote mutual assistance, harmony, respect, cooperation and understanding among members of the two bargaining units of the school district.

To provide services as a bargaining unit between the unions and the school employees.

Contract Maintenance and Member Representation:Contract maintenance and employee representation include the filing of grievances, answering a large assortment of contract questions, and giving advice to members via e-mail and telephone. SC/TA staff represents members in hearings at the schools or work sites, and they also attend bid meetings for hourly employees. Unlike contract negotiations, this service is provided only to dues paying members.

Collective Bargaining:The SC/TA negotiates two contracts for 5,000 employees of the School Board of Sarasota County, Florida; the instructional bargaining unit agreement for the instructional employees and the classified bargaining unit agreement for non-instructional employees. Negotiating teams generally meet once a week from spring to fall in formal contract talks. Informal negotiations occur all year to discuss the issues that arise between contracts. The negotiated contracts cover all School Board employees, whether they are members of the SC/TA or not. After formal contract negotiations are concluded, members vote to ratify or not ratify the contract.

Participation In Charitable Activities:The SC/TA participates in several education related activities that promote education in Sarasota County. The Organization contributes to the Education Foundation of Sarasota County and each year sponsors 5 grants for teachers. The SC/TA sponsors a student at Girls Inc summer and after-school camp. The organization contributes to the League of Women voters. It also contributes to the citizens for better schools. Lastly, the SC/TA funds the meals and refreshments at School Board related teacher training sessions.
