Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF TALL TIMBERS RESEARCH,INC. IS TO FOSTER EXEMPLARY LAND STEWARDSHIP THROUGH RESEARCH, CONSERVATION AND EDUCATION.OUR PRIMARY RESEARCH FOCUS IS THE ECOLOGY OF FIRE AND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT INCLUDING BOBWHITE QUAIL AND OTHER WILDLIFE IN THE SOUTHEASTERN COASTAL PLAIN. OUR CONSERVATION EFFORTS ARE DEDICATED TO HELPING PROTECT THE DISTINCTIVE RED HILLS LANDSCAPE OF SOUTH GEORGIA AND NORTH FLORIDA, AND ITS TRADITIONAL LAND USES. OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM TRANSFERS RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION INFORMATION FOR RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.DEFINING EXEMPLARY LAND STEWARDSHIP EXEMPLARY LAND STEWARDSHIP (ELS) BALANCES ECOLOGICAL VALUES AND ECONOMIC UTILITY WITHIN A FRAMEWORK OF LONG-TERM CONSERVATION. THE FOUNDATION OF ELS ON UPLAND HABITATS IN THE RED HILLS IS THE FREQUENT USE OF FIRE TO ACCOMMODATE MANAGEMENT FOR BOBWHITE QUAIL, SELECTION TIMBER HARVEST, AND OTHER TRADITIONAL LAND USES. SCENIC, OPEN MULTI-AGED FOREST STRUCTURES ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO ELS.

GAME BIRD PROGRAMS - QUAIL MANAGEMENT STAFF CONDUCTED CRITICAL RESEARCH ON NORTHERN BOBWHITE POPULATION DYNAMICS AT CORE STUDY AREAS IN THE RED HILLS OF FLORIDA (TALL TIMBERS RESEARCH STATION AND DIXIE PLANTATION) AND GEORGIA. IN ADDITION TO THESE CORE LONG-TERM RESEARCH SITES, 2 STUDY AREAS IN CENTRAL FLORIDA AID IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES IN SAW PALMETTO/MESIC FLATWOODS HABITATS AND 1 IN NORTH CAROLINA IN SANDHILLS HABITAT TO PROVIDE REGIONAL MANAGEMENT INFORMATION OUTSIDE THE TYPICAL QUAIL PLANTATION BELT IN THE SOUTHEAST. BEYOND RESEARCH, WE CONTINUED REGIONAL EXTENSION, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH ON BOBWHITES IN AL, SC, NC, NJ, DE, TX, MD AND VA. WE RADIO-TAGGED OVER 900 BOBWHITES AS PART OF BOTH LONG-TERM RESEARCH AND GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH ON BOBWHITES ON OUR STUDY SITES; WE TRANSLOCATED WILD BOBWHITES FROM FL AND GA FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES AND TO ESTABLISH NEW POPULATIONS ON 6 SITES IN THE SOUTHEASTERN AND MID-ATLANTIC U.S. WE CONTINUED RESEARCH ON BOBWHITE NEONATE SURVIVAL AND HABITAT USE IN COLLABORATION WITH RESEARCHERS IN TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, AND MISSOURI. WE MONITORED BOBWHITE AND OTHER EARLY-SUCCESSION, GRASSLAND OBLIGATES FOR THE FINAL YEAR OF A COLLABORATIVE FOREST RESTORATION LANDSCAPE PROJECT ON OSCEOLA NATIONAL FOREST AND ON 4 SITES IN FLORIDA ON PUBLIC LANDS. WE CONDUCTED THE FIRST EVER TRANSLOCATION TO PUBLIC LANDS AS PART OF A LARGER RESEARCH INITIATIVE TO UNDERSTAND PUBLIC-LANDS MANAGEMENT AND FACTORS LIMITING BOBWHITE HUNTING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC. QUAIL MANAGEMENT RESEARCH STAFF PUBLISHED 5 PAPERS IN SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS AND SYMPOSIA; PUBLISHED THE ANNUAL QUAIL CALL NEWSLETTER AND 3 ENEWS ARTICLES; AND VISITED OVER 35 PROPERTIES TO PROVIDE OUTREACH ON QUAIL MANAGEMENT.

FIRE PROGRAMS - FIRE SCIENCE AND FIRE ECOLOGY RESEARCH STAFF PRODUCED 29 SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS IN 2019. PER OUR STRATEGIC PLAN WE INCREASED FOCUS ON OUR PRESCRIBED FIRE SCIENCE PROGRAM; A MAJOR WAS THE PRESCRIBED FIRE SCIENCE CONSORTIUM COMPOSED OF GOVERNMENT AND UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS, AND LAND MANAGERS, AND HOSTED A NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SCIENTIST-MANAGER ENGAGEMENT WITH 40 ATTENDEES; HIRED DIRECTOR OF FIRE RESEARCH AND SENIOR SCIENTIST; STAFF MADE 6 PRESENTATIONS AT THE INTERNATIONAL FIRE CONGRESS MEETING, INCLUDING A SPECIAL SESSION ON CHARTING A NEW LINE OF RESEARCH ON PRESCRIBED FIRE SCIENCE; RELEASED QUIC-FIRE PROGRAM TO MODEL FIRE BEHAVIOR; DEVELOPED NOVEL MODEL TO PREDICT FIRE-CAUSED TREE MORTALITY; REFINED REMOTE SENSING RESEARCH TO DETERMINE HOW FREQUENTLY AND TO WHAT EXTENT FIRE IS USED TO MANAGE LANDS IN FLORIDA AND ACROSS ADJACENT ALABAMA AND GEORGIA; CONTINUED RESEARCH ON DENDROCHRONOLOGY TO DETERMINE FIRE HISTORY OVER THE LAST FIVE CENTURIES; CONDUCTED TERRESTRIAL LASER SCANNING AT 5 ECOLOGICALLY-IMPORTANT LONGLEAF PINE SITES; CONDUCTED FIRE TRAINING THROUGH THE PRESCRIBED FIRE TRAINING CENTER FOR 30 AGENCY ADMINISTRATORS AND OVER 100 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES ACROSS THE REGION; BEGAN REGIONAL PRIVATE LANDS BURNING TEAM; CONTINUED RESEARCH ON THE ECOLOGY OF OLD GROWTH LONGLEAF PINE ECOSYSTEMS.

LAND CONSERVANCY - IN 2019, TALL TIMBERS CLOSED ON 10 DONATED CONSERVATION EASEMENTS FOR A TOTAL OF 5,491 ACRES. EIGHT OF THOSE CONSERVATION EASEMENTS ARE LOCATED IN SOUTHWEST GEORGIA AND TWO IN NORTH FLORIDA. WITH THIS ADDITIONAL ACREAGE, TALL TIMBERS HAS NOW SAVED AND STEWARDS SOME 155,139 ACRES IN CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND FEE PROPERTIES. THE ORGANIZATION COMPLETED ALL ANNUAL MONITORING RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ITS CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND LAND HOLDINGS AND REAPPLIED FOR ITS LAND TRUST ACCREDITATION RENEWAL. IN 2019 THE LAND CONSERVANCY WAS AWARDED A $171,250 HEALTHY WATERSHEDS CONSORTIUM GRANT FROM THE U.S. ENDOWMENT FOR FORESTRY AND COMMUNITIES TO SUPPORT LAND CONSERVATION TRANSACTIONS AND PRIORITIZATION IN THE AUCILLA RIVER WATERSHED. WETLAND RESTORATION PROJECTS AT DIXIE, TALL TIMBERS, AND CHEMONIE PLANTATIONS RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE. A $36,000 GRANT FROM THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES ENABLED STAFF TO CONDUCT AMPHIBIAN AND GOPHER TORTOISE SURVEYS ON PRIVATE LAND IN THE GREATER RED HILLS REGION. IN RESPONSE TO A PROPOSED 150-MILE FLORIDA SUNCOAST CONNECTOR TOLL ROAD, PLANNING STAFF AND CONSULTING TEAM BEGAN STUDYING KEY ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ISSUES; HELD HIGH-LEVEL MEETINGS WITH GOVERNOR'S OFFICE AND OTHER STATE AGENCIES AND THE 42-MEMBER TASK FORCE OVERSEEING THE PLANNING PROCESS. IN ADDITION, STAFF WORKED ON UTILITY-SCALE SOLAR FARM ISSUES AND DEVELOPED LOCAL GOVERNMENT POLICIES FOR COMMUNITIES TO PROTECT THEIR NATURAL RESOURCES. THE LAND CONSERVANCY'S COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAM HOSTED NUMEROUS EVENTS AND PROGRAMS TO FOSTER INTEREST IN CONSERVING THE RED HILLS REGION'S NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE. UNDER TALL TIMBERS STEWARDSHIP, THE DIXIE HOUSE RECEIVED A $500,000 MATCHING GRANT FROM THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO COMPLETE THE FINAL PHASE III RESTORATION AND REHABILITATION PROJECT.
