MOSI'S IDEA ZONE IS A "MAKERSPACE AND PROTOTYPING LAB WHERE STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND ADULTS CAN LEARN TO DESIGN, BUILD, AND PLAY WITH IDEAS MADE REAL IN A COLLABORATIVE SPACE. THIS HANDS-ON AREA PROMOTES THE "MAKER" CULTURE OF INNOVATION THROUGH STEAM-BASED PROJECTS. OUR FOCUS WITH THE ART WALL WAS COMMUNITY. THE MAJORITY OF THE YEAR WE HAD EXHIBITIONS BY STUDENTS FROM BERKELEY PREPARATORY SCHOOL AND CARROLLWOOD DAY SCHOOL. TWO OF THE PREMIER PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN OUR AREA. THE BERKELEY EXHIBIT WAS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN SCIENCE AND ART DEPARTMENTS AT THE SCHOOL. INTERNALLY, THEY CHALLENGED THE STUDENTS TO WORK TOGETHER AND CREATE VISUAL AND EDUCATIONAL PIECES. THE RESULTS WERE AMAZING. THIS EVEN INCLUDED A PROJECT CALLED THE BUCCANEER BEE PROJECT, WHICH IS AN ACTUAL STUDENT BUSINESS AT THE SCHOOL SELLING HONEY FROM HIVES ON CAMPUS. THERE WERE DRAWINGS, SCULPTURES AND ACTUAL HONEY PRODUCTS ON DISPLAY ARTISTICALLY AND THAT TOLD THEY SCIENCE OF HOW BEES WORK FLYING AND POLLINATING. THE CARROLLWOOD EXHIBIT WAS EQUALLY AS IMPRESSIVE, FOCUSING ON JUST THE ART DEPARTMENT AT THE SCHOOL. THERE WERE SEVERAL MEDIUMS USED INCLUDING SCULPTURES THAT TOOK EVERYDAY ITEMS AND USED THEM TOGETHER IN DESIGN. THE EXHIBIT ALSO FEATURED ARTWORK BASED ON POPULAR GAMING, POLITICAL STATEMENTS AND OUR CULTURE IN GENERAL. AS ALWAYS, THE ART WALL ALSO FEATURED WORKS OF ART FROM THE AUTISM COMMUNITY DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL TO SHOWCASE THE TALENT OF THESE INDIVIDUALS AS WELL AS TO BRING ATTENTION TO THE CAUSE AND DELIVER ON OUR INCLUSION EFFORTS AS WELL AS BEING A SENSORY FRIENDLY VENUE, AS CERTIFIED BY CARD (CENTER FOR AUTISM AND RELATED DISABILITIES) AT USF. MOSI ALSO ADDED NEW VIRTUAL REALITY RIDE/EXPERIENCES THAT FEATURED APOLLO MOON MISSIONS, WILD VIRTUAL RIDES THROUGH CHICAGO AND DEEPER EXPERIENCES INTO OUTER SPACE.PROGRAMS AT MOSI ALSO SAW THE EXPANSION OF OUR SKY WATCH SERIES. IMAGINED, DESIGNED AND EXECUTED ENTIRELY BY MOSI STAFF MEMBERS, THIS EXHIBIT CELEBRATED THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APOLLO MOON MISSION AND WALK. AN INTERACTIVE AND HISTORICAL EXHIBIT, GUESTS HAD MANY HANDS ON EXPERIENCES AS WELL AS ARTIFACT DISPLAYS TO LEARN FROM. ADDITIONALLY, THE EXHIBIT FEATURED WHAT A LIVING ROOM WOULD LIKE FROM THE APOLLO ERA IN OUR SOCIETY. THIS PORTION OF THE EXHIBIT PROVED TO BE SOME OF THE MOST FUN FOR OUR YOUNGER GUESTS. MOSI ALSO COMPLETED THE RENOVATION OF OUR LEARNING CENTER. THIS IS THE BUILDING ON CAMPUS WHERE MOSI HOLDS EDUCATION PROGRAMS, SUMMER CAMPS, AS WELL AS THE HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SCHOOLS SCIENCE OLYMPICS. THE RENOVATION SAW NEW FLOORS, PAINT AND BADLY NEEDED INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES TO ELECTRICAL AND IT ELEMENTS. ADDITIONAL ADDITIONS ALSO INCLUDED FENCING INSIDE THE BUILDING TO CREATE A MORE SECURE AND SAFE BUILDING WITH THE ABILITY TO CONTROL OUTSIDE ACCESS.THE ART FACTORY AT MOSI CONTINUED TO ENGAGE GUESTS ON THE EXHIBIT PATH. WITH MORE "CREATURE CREATIONS" WITH SCHOOL GROUPS, WE SAW WELL OVER 25,000 CHILDREN ENGAGED WITH USING IMAGINATION TO CREATE PICTURES. ARTWORK PRODUCED FROM THE ART FACTORY ALSO SAW A DIFFERENT APPROACH IN HOW WE SUPPORTED OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. HERE, WE PRODUCED SEVERAL LARGE AND THEMED PAINTINGS FOR GROUPS LIKE THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF TAMPA BAY, AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, CATTLE BARONS BALL AND THE LIGHTNING FOUNDATION THAT WERE IN TURN ACTIONED OFF AS PART OF SILENT AUCTIONS FOR FUNDRAISING. MOSI ALSO COLLABORATED WITH OTHER VENUES, AND WAS THE LEAD IN HOSTING AUTISM AWARENESS DAYS (DAY OF DISCOVERY) EVENTS AT EACH VENUE. THE EVENTS WERE HELD IN APRIL (AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH) AND THEN AGAIN AROUND HALLOWEEN AND CHRISTMAS. THESE EVENTS WERE CROSS PROMOTED BY EACH VENUE AS WELL AS WITH OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS OF C.A.R.D., AUTISM SPEAKS, OUTBACK RESTAURANTS, AMALIE OIL, AND FLORIDA BLUE. EXHIBITS AT MOSI WERE ALSO LABELED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH C.A.R.D. TO ALERT SENSORY SENSITIVE GUESTS TO LOUD NOISES AND FLASHING LIGHTS TO HELP MAKE THE EXPERIENCE INCLUSIVE FOR ALL.
