TO IMPROVE LITERACY LEVELS BY HELPING STUDENTS ADVANCE TO READ AT THEIR APPROPRIATE GRADE LEVEL USING SINGING AS A CRITICAL PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS.
In our first year of operation we successfully implemented the sing-to-improve reading program in two Boys and Girls' clubs, one in Eastern Hillsborough County and one in Pasco County. More than 100 kids, most of whom were struggling readers were able to sing their way to reading gains during the after-school programming time at the clubs.
During the Spring and Summer of 2019 we developed and successfully piloted a tablet based implementation of the singing-to-improve reading program where the kids sang at home. We saw excellent usage statistics which exceeded our expectations dramatically. In after-school sites, we expect 90 minutes of usage per week. Many of the students in the FLIP pilot used the program two times and three times the 90 minutes. This contributed to additional reading gains beyond our normal expectation of 1 years' gain in 3 months time.
