THE NORTON MUSEUM OF ART WELCOMES VISITORS TO EXPERIENCE THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF ART THROUGH INTIMATE AND INNOVATIVE ENCOUNTERS WITH DISTINCTIVE PROGRAMS AND WIDE-RANGING COLLECTIONS.
EXHIBITIONS:DURING FY19, THE NORTON MUSEUM OPERATED A VIGOROUS SCHEDULE AFTER THE GRAND REOPENING IN FEBRUARY THAT FOLLOWED A SPECTACULAR BUILDING PROJECT. THE NORTON MUSEUM PRESENTED 15 EXHIBITIONS, ALL ORGANIZED BY NORTON CURATORS AND FOCUSED ON PAINTING, SCULPTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO AS WELL AS WORKS ON PAPER, COMPLEMENTING ALL OF THE NORTON'S FIVE CURATORIAL DEPARTMENTS. NINA CHANEL ABNEY: NEON FEATURED DENSELY POPULATED, BRILLIANTLY COLORED SCENES WHICH ADDRESSED THE INJUSTICES OF OUR TIME. OUT OF THE BOX: CAMERA-LESS PHOTOGRAPHY ILLUSTRATES WAYS IN WHICH THE MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES OF PHOTOGRAPHY CAN CREATE MEANING WITHOUT A CAMERA. GOING PUBLIC: FLORIDA COLLECTORS CELEBRATE THE NORTON WAS COMPRISED OF RARELY SEEN WORKS FROM LOCAL COLLECTORS. A SELECTION OF THE MUSEUM'S FOUNDER WAS DISPLAYED AT MODERN SPONTANEITY: RALPH NORTON'S WATERCOLOR COLLECTION. GOOD FORTUNE TO ALL: A CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL IN 16TH CENTURY NANJING DEPICTED A LATE MING DYNASTY LANTERN FESTIVAL. OLDENBURG AND VAN BRUGGEN: THE TYPEWRITER ERASER, A FAVORED FORM CELEBRATED THE DONATION WHICH NOW STANDS IN THE MUSEUM'S ENTRANCE. THE MUSEUM HOSTED SPOTLIGHT: RALSTON CRAWFORD ACROSS MEDIA. WHO? A BRIEF HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY THROUGH PORTRAITURE (PARTS 1 AND 2) SHOWCASES THE MUSEUM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHY. COMING SOON: FILM POSTERS FROM THE DWIGHT M. CLEVELAND COLLECTION FEATURED THE LARGEST EVER MUSEUM EXHIBITION OF CLASSIC MOVIE POSTERS. MORE THAN 50 WORKS FROM THE 19TH TO 21ST CENTURIES WERE FEATURED IN SEE AND BE SEEN: PICTURING NOTORIETY. SMALL WORLDS: FIVE CENTURIES OF EUROPEAN PRINTS AND DRAWINGS FROM THE COLLECTION WAS TITLED AFTER WASSILY KANDINSKY'S 1922 PRINT SERIES BY THIS NAME. POSTERS BY TOULOUSE-LAUTREC WERE DISPLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 45 YEARS. GEORGIA O'KEEFE: LIVING MODERN SHOWCASES THE ARTIST'S LIFESTYLE. AND FINALLY, PECKING ORDER: THE SYMBOLISM AND SIGNIFICANCE OF RANK BADGES AND OTHER TRADITIONAL CHINESE TEXTILES HIGHLIGHTS TEXTILES MADE BETWEEN 1800 AND 1949.
ACQUISITIONS AND CONSERVATION: THE ANTICIPATION OF THE OPENING AND A CAMPAIGN BY BOARD MEMBERS TITLED THE "21ST CENTURY CAMPAIGN" FOR GIFTS AND PROMISED GIFTS LED TO ANOTHER EXCEPTIONAL YEAR OF ACQUISITIONS FOR THE NORTON. ADDITIONALLY, IN PREPARATION FOR THE GRAND OPENING, SEVERAL WORKS WERE CLEANED AND CONSERVED. MOST IMPORTANTLY WAS THE LENGTHY AND SPECIAL TREATMENT OF A SIX PANEL CHINESE PAINTING OF THE 16TH CENTURY, RARE AND HIGHLY DETAILED, IT ILLUSTRATES NEW YEAR LANTERN FESTIVAL. AN 18TH CENTURY, EIGHT PANELS OF SILK AND VELVET ILLUSTRATING FLORAL AND BIRD IMAGES ALSO UNDERWENT CLEANING AND CONSERVATION. BOTH ARE FEATURED IN THE OPENING OF THE NEWLY RENOVATED AND EXPANDED CHINESE COLLECTION GALLERIES. SCULPTURES NOW ON VIEW IN OUR NEW SCULPTURE GARDEN WERE CLEANED BEFORE THE OPENING OF THE MUSEUM IN ADDITION TO THE TOUCH-UPS OF A NEW, MAJOR SCULPTURE GRACING THE NEW WEST FACADE OF THE MUSEUM-TYPEWRITER ERASER BY CLAES OLDENBURG AND COOSJE VAN BRUGGEN. IN ADDITION, THE CLEANING OF DIANA AND ACTAEON, SCULPTURES BY PAUL MANSHIP COMMISSIONED BY OUR FOUNDER, RALPH NORTON, WAS A REVELATION, RESULTING IN THE RESTORATION OF THEM TO THEIR ORIGINAL GOLDEN PATINA. MINOR CLEANING AND CONSERVATION WAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED ON A JADE BIRD SCULPTURE AND ONE WORK ON PAPER. A FRAME FOR A MAJOR PAINTING BY NJIDEKA AKUNYILI CROSBY WAS FABRICATED IN ORDER TO PLACE THIS IMPORTANT WORK ON VIEW FOR THE OPENING.
EDUCATION:IN FY19, THE MUSEUM WAS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FINAL PREPARATIONS OF THE NEW BUILDING DURING THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF FY 19. OFF-SITE PROGRAMS CONTINUED, INCLUDING MEMBER PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS, FAMILY AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS AT LIBRARIES ACROSS PALM BEACH COUNTY, DRAWING APPROXIMATELY 1,500 MEMBERS AND PUBLIC TO THESE PROGRAMS. WHEN THE MUSEUM OPENED ON FEBRUARY 9, 2019, THREE CONSECUTIVE SATURDAY CELEBRATIONS DREW OVER 13,000 VISITORS. OUR LATER COMMUNITY CELEBRATION FOR BASTILLE DAY DREW AN ADDITIONAL 1,490. ART AFTER DARK, A GATEWAY PROGRAM THAT INTRODUCES ADULTS AND FAMILIES TO THE MUSEUM, RE-LAUNCHED ON FRIDAY EVENINGS (RATHER THAN THURSDAYS) AND DREW APPROXIMATELY 19,750 BETWEEN FEBRUARY 15 AND SEPTEMBER 27, 2019. SCHOOL TOURS DREW 2,500 STUDENTS TO THE MUSEUM BETWEEN FEBRUARY 11 AND SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2019, AND ANOTHER 2,250 WERE SERVED AT THEIR SCHOOLS BY NORTON STAFF THROUGH NORTON SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS. A PILOT PARTNERSHIP WAS INITIATED AT FIVE PALM BEACH COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS TO FOSTER SECOND GRADERS' LITERACY SKILLS THROUGH TOURS AND ART LESSONS WRITTEN BY PARTNER-SCHOOL TEACHERS IN COORDINATION WITH MUSEUM STAFF. OVER 500 TEACHERS PARTICIPATED IN FREE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENTS AT THE MUSEUM. 920 SUMMER CAMPERS ENJOYED TOURS AND ART ACTIVITIES DURING THEIR SUMMER BREAK, MOST LED BY FOUR COLLEGE INTERNS EMPLOYED BY THE MUSEUM. OVER 200 SCHOOL AND AFTERSCHOOL ARTS OUTREACH STUDENTS SHOWED THEIR ART IN THE MUSEUM'S MARDEN COMMUNITY GALLERY, EARNING RAVE REVIEWS FROM STAFF AND VISITORS. ATTENDANCE FOR THE AFTERSCHOOL ARTS OUTREACH PROGRAM, SERVING EIGHT ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COUNTY, REACHED 1,800, PROVIDING ONGOING, HIGH-QUALITY ARTS PROGRAMS TO YOUNG PEOPLE IN UNDERSERVED AREAS. THE PROGRAM IS OFFERED AT NO COST TO HOST ORGANIZATION OR TO THE STUDENTS WHO CAN PARTICIPATE YEAR-ROUND. THE TEEN ADVISORY SQUAD OF 15 MEMBERS CONTINUED ITS MEANINGFUL WORK, OFFERING PROGRAMS SUCH AS TEEN SESSIONS FOR CELEBRATING BLACK FLORIDA COMMUNITY DAY AND WORKSHOPS WITH MUSEUM DOCENTS. DOCENTS AND VOLUNTEERS LOGGED 7,750 HOURS OF SERVICE DURING THESE MONTHS, AND DOCENTS LED TOURS FOR OVER 10,000 VISITORS.
