Provides and coordinates continuing medical education for physicians and allied health professionals, informs and educates the public on health care issues, and improves patients' access to health care, collects and studies information on the health care delivery system, and recognizes groups and individuals who strive to improve the quality of health care in PBC
Project Access: Mission & History Since 2005, the mission of Project Access has been to help low-income, uninsured Palm Beach County residents obtain health coverage, connect them to volunteer specialty healthcare providers, and link them with vital community resources needed to live a healthy life. By working directly with Palm Beach County Free Clinics and Federally Qualified Health Centers, Project Access links patients directly with specialty healthcare services, dental services, diagnostic imaging and hospital care through the Project Access Direct Care program. Over the past 13 years, the program has provided access to healthcare for over 13,000 PBC residents and $13.4 million in charitable care through the over 700 volunteer healthcare providers that have donated their services to the program. Project Access 2017 Data: In 2017 Project Access served roughly 1000 individuals in PBC with accessing healthcare and community resource needs. Nearly 400 patients were provided Direct Care with PA volunteer physicians; 188 were assisted with obtaining ACA Marketplace plans; 44 were assisted with obtaining community resources through PA Community Connections; and approximately 350 individuals were given health coverage information via phone or community health fair events. The total cost of services provided through Project Access in 2017 was $1.3 million.
Healthcare Emergency Response Coalition (HERC)& Medical Reserve Corps (MRC): All of the planning, training, and exercising that HERC conducted or participated in truly assisted the Coalition preparing for and responding to the Hurricane Irma event. The Coalition worked in a collaborative effort to address anticipated unmet needs; coordinated communication between members and community stakeholders; and augmented efforts to support responding agencies. The Coalition launched a "Stop the Bleed" program throughout the County where several trainers teach the AmericanCollege of Surgeons approved course called "Save a life: What Everyone Should Know to Stop Bleeding After an Injury". To date, over 2100 Health Care providers, Department of Health, Fire, Police and other community healthcare members (including nursing, pharmacy, and paramedic students) have been trained. The Coalition convened a taskforce, with the assistance of a consultant, created a healthcare driven Opioid Response Plan with the following overarching goal: Reduce opioid deaths in PBC by using a comprehensive approach that recognizes addiction as a medical illness and accomplished by an evidence based strategy that address Prevention, Rescue, Treatment and Recovery. Participated in more than 50 hours of disaster preparedness trainings and exercises. The PBC Medical Reserve Corps was activated for Hurricane Irma and eleven (11) volunteers from a variety of clinical professions provided clinical support to clients at the Special Needs Shelter. MRC volunteers helped with logistics and setup, provided patient care, and assisted with demobilization of the shelter. MRC volunteers donated over 320 hours to serve the community's most vulnerable population.
Physician Leadership: The Physician Leadership Academy of South Florida (PLA) provides training and workshops on developing leadership skills, information about health care issues facing Floridians, and tools which will enable them make significant differences in current and future leadership roles held. The Academy has been endorsed by the Florida Medical Association, which is also providing CMEs. Physicians in the program complete leadership self-assessments and attend sessions on advocacy, media and communications, cultural competency, conflict resolution, building medical teams and becoming a transformative leader. These are our future leaders in medicine.
