Organizations Filed Purposes:
PALM BEACH DRAMAWORKS IS A PROFESSIONAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT THEATRE COMPANY THAT ENGAGES AND ENTERTAINS AUDIENCES WITH PROVOCATIVE AND TIMELESS PRODUCTIONS THAT PERSONALLY IMPACT EACH INDIVIDUAL. OUR VISION IS TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE THROUGH THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF LIVE THEATRE.
THREE MAIN-STAGE SHOWS, WERE PRODUCED DURING THE SEASON PROVIDING A QUALITY THEATRICAL ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PRACTICE THEIR TALENTS, TO LEARN THEATRE ARTS, AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE INVOLVED IN LOCAL PRODUCTIONS AND COMMUNITY THEATRICAL ENRICHMENT. THE THREE MAIN-STAGE PRODUCTIONS WERE: STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE - 31 PERFORMANCES/5,278 ATTENDEES; ORDINARY AMERICANS - 36 PERFORMANCES/7,500 ATTENDEES; SKYLIGHT - 31 PERFORMANCES/5,784 ATTENDEES.
APPROXIMATELY 10% OF OUR EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED ON THE IDENTIFICATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PLAYS THROUGH OUR DRAMAWORKSHOP. WE RECEIVE AGENT SUBMITTED SCRIPTS FOR PLAYWRIGHTS AROUND THE COUNTRY WHICH ARE READ AND ADJUDICATED BY A GROUP OF ARTISTS. 5 FINALISTS ARE SELECTED TO RECEIVE STAGED READINGS AT OUR NEW YEAR/NEW PLAY FESTIVAL OVER 3 DAYS IN JANUARY WITH AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PLAYWRIGHT TO ATTEND AND GARNER FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY. 1,068 PATRONS ATTENDED THE 5 READINGS AND THE PANEL DISCUSSION.
APPROXIMATELY 10% OF OUR EFFORT IS SPENT ON STUDENT EDUCATIONAL. INITIATIVES, INCLUDING IN-SCHOOL MASTER CLASSES ON ACTING AND PLAYWRITING, AND APPRENTICESHIP AND INTERN PROGRAMS FOR THEATRE STUDENTS. SIX SPECIAL STUDENT PERFORMANCES OF OUR PRODUCTIONS WERE HELD AT NO CHARGE SERVING 830 STUDENTS FROM 15 AREA SCHOOLS WITH TRANSPORTATION ALSO PROVIDED. ADDITIONALLY, 150 STUDENTS WERE GIVEN FREE OR REDUCED PRICED TICKETS TO REGULARLY SCHEDULED PERFORMANCES. INTERESTED STUDENTS WERE OFFERED POSITIONS TO WORK AS APPRENTICES ASSISTING DIRECTORS, STAGE MANAGERS, LIGHT AND SOUND OPERATORS, AND PROP AND COSTUME MISTRESSES. STUDENTS ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO AUDITION AND RECEIVE GUIDANCE FROM THEATRE PROFESSIONALS TO POLISH AUDITION TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING MONOLOGUES AND SONG PRESENTATIONS. WE HELD A YOUNG PLAYWRIGHT'S FESTIVAL IN WHICH 10-MINUTE PLAYS WERE SOLICITED FROM STUDENTS AT ALL PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOLS. 27 PLAYS WERE SUBMITTED, AND 10 WERE SELECTED AS "WINNERS" TO RECEIVE A STAGED READING OF THEIR PLAY WITH PROFESSIONAL ACTORS AND DIRECTORS ALONG WITH A 250.00 AWARD A PUBLISHED COPY OF THEIR SCRIPT. WE PRESENTED A PLAY CALLED SWAGGER AT 24 MIDDLE SCHOOLS FOR 8,284 STUDENT ATTENDEES, AND CREATED AND PRESENTED A PLAY CALLED LIVE TO TELL AT 4 MIDDLE SCHOOLS FOR 799 STUDENT ATTENDEES.
