Promoting Civic Engagement and Community Organizing. We are a nonprofit incubator and social change accelerator. We believe in the power of grassroots community organizations and work with new projects and initiatives to determine their best path forward. Side Project provides fiscal sponsorship, management and grant support for new and innovative projects focused on progressive social change. We help social change agents and groups implement new programs, bring together groups to collaborate on an issue, and test new approaches to social change. Fiscal sponsorship is a common mechanism used in the nonprofit sector that enables individuals and organizations to start new programs without establishing a new, separate nonprofit organization. In 2019, we worked alongside several initiatives focused on creating more inclusive and welcoming communities, including those who were implementing new programs, collaborating across sectors on issues, and testing out new approaches to social change. Our projects cross many fields in the nonprofit sector and have strong, capable leadership with a variety of small to large operations. Some of our projects are as follows: Pittsburgh Center for Autistic Advocacy (PCAA) works to improve the lives of Autistic people and seeks to advance the equity of Autistic people in all realms of life. They believe that all Autistic people and disabled people have the right to follow their dreams and be fully involved in decisions that affect their lives. PCAA also believes in inclusive education and empowering Autistic leaders in their community using principles from the disability rights movement and intersectional feminism. In 2019, PCAA reached over 2250 individuals, provided nearly 250 hours of peer support, offered self-advocacy trainings for 60 participants, and reached 50 hours of social integration support. They also earned the PEAL Art of Inclusion Youth Advocacy award for their in-school trainings. Accessible YOUniverse focuses on increasing inclusion of people with disabilities through advocacy, education, and representation. Accessible YOUniverse seeks to bring parties together, facilitating long-overdue conversations that break down silos, and ensuring that the voices of people with disabilities are represented and heard in these discussions. In 2019, Accessible YOUniverse hosted several round tables and the first Ramping Up the Divide Summit, a day-long workshop where participants discussed accessibility and established priorities for improvement. The Interdependence Network (IN) is a collaborative organized by individuals and human service organizations from around the United States, Canada, and Australia. Members have committed to shifting their emphasis from the traditional medical model approach in rehabilitation to an interdependence model, which builds and fosters social capital and inclusion within communities as the primary strategy for enabling people with disabilities to become more integrated into society. The group hosted the Call Me Al podcast featuring interviews with leaders in the disability community. Open Up PGH offered inclusive movement practices and mindfulness tools centering on people with disabilities, serving over 300 participants and expanding their services by 50% in 2019. The South Florida Link Coalition (SFLC) is a multidisciplinary, collaborative initiative created to increase education and awareness, address public policy, create programs, and lead research on The Link between animal cruelty and human violence. The South Florida Link Coalition facilitates community and social change by working to bring together members of the community and health care, criminal justice, and animal welfare agencies to foster healthy relationships between people and animals. In 2019, SFLC assisted 17 domestic violence victims and their pets.
Training and technical assistance focused on helping the community understand the state and federal laws impacting social justice-themed projects. Side Project, Inc provides training and technical assistance focused on helping the community understand state and federal laws that impact social justice-themed projects. Side Project's training and technical assistance program delivered both in-person and online-based education and technical assistance. We provided information and guidance to nonprofits and grassroots projects on corporate, tax, and compliance issues. This included corporate governance issues, charitable registration compliance issues, tax-exempt issues, including executive compensation, private inurement, excess benefit, and the restrictions on lobbying and political activity. In 2019, Side Project provided over 3500 hours of pro bono and low bono one-on-one support to hundreds of nonprofits and would-be nonprofit organizations (with budgets less than $5,000,000) in Pennsylvania and Florida. Additionally, we provided on-going low bono and pro bono legal, community organizing, and operational support to more than 35 small, grassroots nonprofits focused on social justice issues. In addition to technical assistance, we also published the Pro Bono Publico blog that helps community organizers and nonprofit executive directors to understand the state and federal legal issues impacting their organizations. In Florida, we hosted nonprofit legal clinic workshops in partnership with Nonprofit First and the Center for Social Change on legal and compliance issues for small nonprofits. We also hosted a lunch and learn series at CoWork Boynton focused on fiscal sponsorship, how to start a nonprofit, and a founder's talk. In Pittsburgh, we partnered with the Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management, the Carnegie Library Center for Nonprofits, and hosted a workshop for individuals thinking about starting a nonprofit. The focus was on the incorporation process and alternatives that may be more appropriate, as well as nonprofit governance issues, reporting requirements and other legal and management issues that impact nonprofit organizations. We also hosted a webinar on "Fiscal Sponsorship" in partnership with the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Management and Nonprofit Issues.
