THE ORCHESTRA IS DEDICATED TO BRINGING ORCHESTRAL MUSIC OF THE HIGHEST CALIBER TO SOUTH FLORIDA. ITS MISSION IS TO DELIGHT, INSPIRE AND EDUCATE THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE THROUGH MUSIC.
REMAINING TRUE TO ITS MISSION TO DELIGHT, INSPIRE AND EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY, SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (SFSO) PERFORMED MORE THAN 50 CONCERTS AND EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH FLORIDA REGION, INCLUDING MONROE, MIAMI-DADE, BROWARD AND PALM BEACH COUNTIES, SERVING APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE MASTERWORKS CONCERT SERIES FEATURED WORLD- RENOWNED SOLOISTS, INCLUDING PIANIST SVETLANA SMOLINA, CELLIST JULIAN SCHWARZ AND OTHERS. THE ARTISTIC HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON WAS THE GROUNDBREAKING NEW PRODUCTION OF GERSHWIN'S GREAT AMERICAN OPERA PORGY AND BESS, WITH RECORD-BREAKING ATTENDANCE, STATE OF THE ART SET DESIGN, AND SPECTACULAR CAST OF CULTURALLY DIVERSE SINGERS AND MUSICIANS. IN ADDITION, THROUGH THE TRANSFORMATIVE MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM, SYMPHONY IN THE SCHOOLS, MORE THAN 10,000 CULTURALLY UNDERSERVED STUDENTS EXPERIENCED THE MAGIC OF LIVE CLASSICAL MUSIC, MANY FOR THE FIRST TIME.
DURING FY19, SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY PRESENTED A SERIES OF MASTERWORKS CONCERTS -- FEATURING WORLD-CLASS SOLOISTS AND MUSICIANS AND A SPECIAL PRESENTATION OF THE GROUNDBREAKING GERSHWIN OPERA PORGY AND BESS -- WHICH WERE ATTENDED BY MORE THAN 10,000 PATRONS AND STUDENTS IN BROWARD, PALM BEACH, MIAMI-DADE MONROE COUNTIES. SFSO ALSO BECAME A "SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS PARTNER" WITH THE BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, CO-PRODUCING 2 CONCERTS: THE SOLD-OUT FILM-TO-LIVE-ORCHESTRA EVENT, DISNEY'S A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, AND WORLD'S FOREMOST CHILDREN'S CHORAL GROUP, VIENNA BOYS CHOIR. FACILITATING ENGAGEMENT WITH THE ARTS FOR MORE THAN 10,000 CULTURALLY UNDERSERVED STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES THIS YEAR, THE IMPACTFUL SYMPHONY IN THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM FEATURED TWO THEMES. PROKOFIEV'S MUSICAL ADVENTURE, PETER AND THE WOLF, IS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ORCHESTRA THROUGH COMPARING AND CONTRASTING ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTS THROUGH THE ENGAGING STORY OF PETER AND HIS ANIMAL FRIENDS. PRESERVE THE CORAL REEF, WITH COMMISSIONED MUSIC AND COSTUMES, IS A MULTI-MEDIA JOURNEY THAT EMPOWERS CHILDREN -- THROUGH CLASSICAL MUSIC -- ABOUT THE ROLE THAT THEY PLAY IN THE ENVIRONMENT. FURTHER COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ALSO INCLUDES THE INITIATION OF THE COMMUNITY BEATS PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES MEMBERS OF SOUTH FLORIDA'S DIVERSE COMMUNITIES OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPERIENCE THE PERFORMING ARTS IN INTIMATE, UNEXPECTED SPACES. THROUGH A SERIES OF EVENTS FEATURING MUSIC, FOOD, AND SOCIALIZATION OPPORTUNITIES, PARTICIPANTS WERE PROVIDED FREE ACCESS TO ART, GUEST SOLOISTS AND MUSICIANS IN UNINTIMITADING AND UNUSUAL LOCATIONS. IN ADDITION, SFSO IS A CULTURAL LEADER AND COMMUNITY ASSET, HAVING A FAR- REACHING ECONOMIC IMPACT. AS THE LARGEST ORCHESTRAL EMPLOYER IN THE REGION, THE ORGANIZATION GENERATES JOBS FOR NEARLY 300 MUSICIANS, PRODUCTION STAFF AND ARTS ADMINISTRATORS DURING THE CURRENT FISCAL YEAR. NOT TO MENTION THE EVENT-RELATED SPENDING BY AUDIENCES ON GOODS AND SERVICES LIKE MEALS, PARKING AND ACCOMMODATIONS. DESPITE A MORE THAN 97% CUT IN STATE FUNDING FOR THE ARTS, SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY CONTINUED TO HAVE AN IMMEASURABLE EFFECT ON THE COMMUNITIES IT SERVES.
