Organizations Filed Purposes:
MARIATU'S HOPE INC. IS ORGANIZED FOR THE EXPRESSED PURPOSE OF HELPING THE PEOPLE OF SIERRA LEONE WITH IMPROVED SAFE DRINKING WATER ACCESS, EDUCATING AND IMPROVING PROPER SANITATION PRACTICES, EDUCATING AND PROMOTING GOOD HEALTH AND HYGIENE TRAINING BOTH AT SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES. HELP REDUCE TEENAGE PREGNANCY THROUGH EDUCATION AND PEER GROUP SUPPORT. HELP TO REDUCE INFANT MORTALITY AND MALNUTRITION. MOST IMPORTANT, IS TO EXPRESS GOD'S LOVE FOR ALL THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.
WATER PROJECTS: FUNDS RAISED IN THE US FROM INDIVIDUAL DONORS AND OTHER INTERESTED NON- PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS HAVE BEEN SENT TO A SIERRA LEONE NGO TO: 1. REHABILITATE EXISTING HAND DUG WATER WELLS BY OPENING THEM UP, PUMPING THEM DRY, INSPECTING THE INSIDE, CONSTRUCTING NEW CASING, INSTALLING NEW CASING INSIDE THE WELL, DIGGING THE WELL DEEPER WITH THE HELP OF LOCAL RESIDENTS AND MAKING OTHER REPAIRS AS NEEDED. AFTER DEEPING THE WELL, A PAD AND WALL ARE CONSTRUCTED AND A NEW HAND PUMP IS INSTALLED ON THE WELL. THE WELL IS SHOCKED WITH TO CHLORINE TO KILL ALL BACTERIA, AND THE WATER TESTED TO ENSURE IT MEETS GOVERNMENT STANDARDS. 2. ADD NEW WATER POINTS (WELLS) USING A DEEP ROCK DRILLING RIG (MORE THAN 120 FT) USING A SPECIALIZED TRAINED DRILLING TEAM. 3. PURCHASED AND SENT TO SIERRA LEONE ADDITIONAL PUMPS FOR INSTALLATION AS WELL AS PARTS TO REPAIR EXISTING WELLS. THERE ARE TRAINED LOCAL RESIDENTS AND MISSIONARY TEAMS FROM THE US FOR COMMUNITIES IN NEED OF SAFE WATER.
INFANT NUTRITION PROJECT: DONATIONS COLLECTED IN THE US FROM INDIVIDUAL AND BUSINESS OWNERS HAVE BEEN COLLECTED WITH THE ORGANIZATION'S GOAL OF STEMMING THE VERY HIGH MATERNAL AND INFANT MORTALITY RATE IN SIERRA LEONE. DONATIONS ARE SENT ON A REGULAR MONTHLY BASIS TO THE TARGET SIERRA LEONE NGO THAT IMPLEMENTS THE GOALS OF MARIATU'S HOPE BY: 1. SUPPORTING AND CARING FOR BABIES WHOSE MOTHERS DIED IN OR AFTER CHILD BIRTH WHO ARE SHUNNED BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND BABIES WHOSE MOTHERS ARE ALIVE BUT HIV+ OR ARE TOO SICK TO BREASTFEE THEIR BABIES. 2. PROVIDING WEEKLY NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT TO BABIES (INCLUDES OTHERS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE ABOVE) TO BE SURE THAT THE BABIES ARE GETTING ENOUGH TO EAT, AND APPROPRIATE CARE. THEY ARE ALSO CHECKED FOR ANY HEALTH PROBLEMS AND REFERRED TO THE APPROPRIATE CARE FACILITIES.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: FUNDS ARE SENT TO THE SIERRA LEONE NGO TO ASSIST WITH: 1. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TO DO BASELINE SURVEYS IN TARGET COMMUNITIES WHERE WATER PROJECTS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED, EXPLAIN COST RECOVERY PROGRAM TO COMMUNITIES,AND SIGN MOU(MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING)WITH THE COMMUNITIES. 2. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE HYGIENE TEAM TO CREATE A HYGIENE PROGRAM TO BE IMPLEMENTED AT THE TIME OF THE WATER PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION. THE HYGIENE TEAM WORKS CLOSELY WITH ESTABLISHED CHILD HEALTH CLUBS TO TRAIN COMMUNITIES AND SCHOOLS ON BETTER HYGIENE AND SANITATION PRACTICES.
