The mission of the Idaho Humane Society (IHS) is to advocate for the welfare and responsible care of animals, protect them from neglect and cruelty, and promote humane education, awareness and compassion for all living creatures.
To prevent cruelty, abuse and neglect of animals, provide medical care, and promote education.
Animal Shelter - Receiving, sheltering, care and adoption of stray and unwanted animals; provides behavioral evaluation and training for dogs prior to adoption; transfer of pets from other animal shelters for care and adoption through our facilities. In FY19, IHS received almost 10,000 lost and surrendered pets and transferred in over 1,250 pets for adoption from other shelters. We adopted out over 6,600 animals; Reunited almost 1,800 lost pets with their owners; Nurtured over 1,700 animals in foster care; and transferred out over 230 pets to other shelters. In addition, we saved almost 300 cats through our WISKR prison foster program and helped(Continued on Schedule O)train over 150 dogs with behavior and socialization challenges through our IDAPI prison dog program.The Idaho Humane Society presented humane education, pet safety tips, hands-on camp experience, and shelter tours to over 7,300 youngsters through our Humane Education Program. In addition, we distributed almost 36,000 lbs. of pet food through our pet food donation and distribution program to needy families and assisted the pets of 107 home-bound seniors by delivering over 14,500 lbs. of pet food to companion animals through Pet Food Pantry via Meals on Wheels program.
Veterinary Medical Services - Provides full service veterinary medicine and surgery to the community utilizing a household income based sliding fee scale; provides comprehensive medical and surgical care to all pets in our shelter; provides post adoption medical care for animals adopted through our shelter; provides training in medicine and surgery for fourth year veterinary college students. Provides affordable spay and neuter surgeries. Performed almost 8,000 spays/neuters and provided $1.6 million in discounted and free medical services to shelter pets and pets of local low-income families.
Animal Care and Control, Investigations and Rescue - Deputized animal welfare officers provide health and public safety protection for residents and animals; rescue stray and abandoned animals from jurisdictions served by IHS, and conduct cruelty investigations and seizures of injured, neglected or cruelly treated domestic animals. Responded to 725 reports of cruelty, neglect and abandonment.
