SER advances the science, practice and policy of ecological restoration to sustain biodiversity, improve resilience in a changing climate, and re-establish an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and culture.
Since 1993, SER has published the peer-reviewed journal Restoration Ecology which has become a primary conduit by which researchers publish their findings on ecological restoration. SER also publishes key guidance documents such as the SER International Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration. Additionally, SER publishes a book series in association with Island Press - The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration - that has grown to include 28 titles on a variety of restoration-related topics.
SER has made significant contributions to policy discussions nationally and internationally through collaborations with such bodies as the IUCN, UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration (GPFLR). SER continues to make significant contributions to policy discussions internationally through collaborations with the same and other national and international bodies. SER staff and board members participate in international workshops and policy meetings to provide technical expertise and capacity building support. Our international conference also featured keynote speakers and symposia to advance these issues. Through SER's Science and Policy Committee, and chapter and international conferences, SER continues to bring increased attention to the importance of ecological restoration as a tool for addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges - e.g. climate chance, biodiversity loss, water security, rural poverty - and continues to guide these bodies in incorporating restoration as a specific component within their activities and strategic plans.
With more than 2,900 members in more than 70 countries, SER's global network represents the world's foremost source of scientific and practical expertise on the repair of degraded ecosystems. SER members include scientists, engineers, planners, program managers, policy makers, landscape architects, and community advocates representing the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Through this collective expertise, SER works to advance the field of ecological restoration by facilitating knowledge sharing among practitioners, researchers, and decision makers. The primary means by which the Society provides for this type of exchange are through Membership, Publications, Conferences, webinars, an online restoration resource center and Policy.
