FRIENDS OF THE TETON RIVER (FTR) USES SOUND SCIENCE AND COLLABORATION TO PROTECT AND IMPROVE CLEAN WATER, HEALTHY STREAMS AND A THRIVING FISHERY IN TETON VALLEY, IDAHO AND WYOMING. FTR IMPLEMENTS COMMUNITY-DRIVEN RESTORATION PROJECTS AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO BENEFIT WATER RESOURCES IN THE TETON WATERSHED.
WATERSHED RESTORATION: FTR'S WATERSHED RESTORATION PROGRAM FOCUSES ON RESTORING & REVEGETATING DAMAGED STREAM CHANNELS & RIPARIAN AREAS, IMPROVING FISH PASSAGE, & IMPROVING STREAM FLOW AND GROUND WATER RESOURCES IN THE TETON WATERSHED. RESTORATION WORK REDUCES EROSION, RESTORES FUNCTIONAL FLOODPLAINS, IMPROVES STREAM FLOWS & WATER QUALITY, ENHANCES GROUNDWATER RESOURCES & CREATES HEALTHY HABITAT FOR FISH, WITH A FOCUS ON THREATENED YELLOWSTONE CUTTHROAT TROUT. IN FY2020, FTR SECURED FUNDING FOR HABITAT RESTORATION ON THE TETON RIVER AND TETON CREEK, FISH PASSAGE RESTORATION ON SOUTH LEIGH CREEK, STEAM FLOW RESTORATION ON CANYON CREEK, AND FOR THE AQUIFER RECHARGE PROGRAM.
RESEARCH & MONITORING: FTR CONDUCTS RESEARCH & MONITORING FOR TROUT POPULATIONS, WATER QUALITY, SOIL HEALTH & WATER QUANTITY. THIS RESEARCH IS DESIGNED TO MEASURE RESTORATION PROGRAM SUCCESSES, TRACK TRENDS & IDENTIFY THREATS TO WATERSHED HEALTH, & PRIORITIZE FUTURE RESTORATION WORK. IN FY2020, FTR CONDUCTED A WATERSHED-WIDE TROUT POPULATION ASSESSMENT, COLLECTED STREAM TEMPERATURE AND FLOW DATA; MONITORED GROUNDWATER RECHARGE AND CONSERVATION FARMING TEST PLOTS.
EDUCATION & OUTREACH: FTR'S COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF ALL AGES TO LEARN & MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT WATER. IN FY2020, FTR CONTINUED TO ENGAGE K-12 STUDENTS IN CLASSROOM, ONLINE, AND FIELD SCIENCE PROGRAMS; IMPLEMENTED COST SHARE & COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR DRINKING WATER TESTING AND PROTECTION AND COORDINATED AGRICULTURAL AND SOIL HEALTH EDUCATION INITIATIVES.
