Organizations Filed Purposes:
Enriching seniors' lives through advocacy, diverse programming, and wellness and nutrition opportunities.
Nutrition: Nutritious lunches are offered five days a week in the Senior Community Center or by home-delivery. In 2020, 5,377 meals were served, 3,360 of them by home-delivery. The total number of meals served has increased by over 50% in the past two years, and more meals were served in 2020 than in 2019, in spite of the COVID-19 closure. In 2020 there was 318% increase in home-delivered meals. The rapid shift to home-delivered meals was made possible by volunteers who stepped forward to deliver meals and work in the kitchen and by donors who supported the increased costs associated with packaging and delivering meals. While following CDC guidelines for contact with vulnerable seniors, home-delivery volunteers were still able to check on the well-being of isolated seniors and provide a welcome social contact. Revenue was generated through donations for meals and by increasing support from the Eastern Idaho Community Action Project.
Wellness: Fitness programming, including Tai Chi, Yoga, Fit and Fall Proof, and Pilates classes, is offered five days a week. Closure because of COVID-19 meant most of these services were delivered online. We also offer clinics for foot care, vaccinations, and health screenings. All of these programs are offered free of charge, though some of the volunteer instructors do accept donations. Fit and Fall Proof is a State of Idaho supported program, which offers training and material support to volunteer instructors recruited by Seniors West of the Tetons. Under normal operations, more than 100 seniors participate in exercise, wellness and recreational activities each week. Expenses for these programs consist largely of facility costs. In 2020, we renovated the main activity room of the Senior Community Center to make it more congenial for fitness classes. Dining tables were outfitted with rollers, making them easier to move; storage space was expanded; and new equipment was purchased for the medical room and for the equipment loan program. A study of the Center's air quality was done in July 2020, and this resulted in a major upgrade to our ventilation system, which should make our center a safer place for our seniors to be active when it reopens.
Advocacy, Communication and Outreach: Seniors West of the Tetons partners with our regional Area Agency on Aging to ensure services are available to keep seniors in their homes. We provide assistance with Medicare and other health insurance, federal and state taxes, access to health care, and general referrals to other services. This advocacy is channeled through our monthly print newsletter, which is mailed to 450 seniors and community members, and regular online news updates. Our website and social media keep seniors informed about community happenings, senior center events and issues of concern to seniors, like Medicare enrollment and tax fraud. Each month, board members and other volunteers make approximately 75 direct contacts with vulnerable seniors via phone, email, or in-person. Much of this communication and outreach activity is supported by our growing data system, which allows us to make more frequent and more targeted contacts with seniors and to link seniors directly with services and programs of interest. During the pandemic, we also learned that online events definitely have an important place in our communication and outreach strategy. We are planning on investing in A/V equipment that will allow us to offer higher quality online programs, including "hybrid" events offered both online and in the Senior Community Center.
