Organizations Filed Purposes:
The mission of the Pettaquamscutt Historical Society, operating as the South County History Center, is to lead the discovery and preservation of South County's history.
The Society maintains a significant collection of historic archival materials and artifacts, as well as a research library. These collections are available for scholarly research, presented to the public through exhibitions and programming, loaned to other cultural institutions, and preserved for future generations.
The Society is engaged in historic preservation, namely at the Old Washington County Jail (1858/1861) in Kingston, Rhode Island; the Potter Family Burial Ground in Kingston, Rhode Island; and the Quaker Burial Ground in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Each of these properties is preserved by the Society and used to fulfill the organization's mission.
The Society's internship and volunteer programs offer hands-on learning opportunities in the areas of collections management, library science, and museum administration. These experiences allow students and young professionals to gain expertise needed to complete graduate programs and become leaders of cultural heritage institutions.
