Organizations Filed Purposes: Preservation of historical buildings, artifacts, and related community education.

Museum Program: The organization collects, preserves, and presents early landmarks of historical significance to the Town of Little Compton for the education and enrichment of the community. LCHS maintains historic buildings including Wilbor House, Friends Meeting House, Archival Barn,19th Century Barn, 19th Century Carriage House, Peggotty Artist Studio, Peaked Top School, Corn Crib, Privy, and the Chicken Food Cookhouse. The collection includes approximately 13,000 objects, photos, and documents relating to the history of Little Compton.

Little Compton: A Changing Landscape This year-long public history program explored the intersection of history and the landscape from the time of drifting continents to the present day. It produced a beautifully illustrated hard cover book of essays on local landscape history, a special exhibition that ran from July to October, a lecture series, and related public programs. We estimate an audience of approximately 4000 people were served. This program added new information to our understanding of Little Comptons history and to our archive, and continued our efforts to inform and engage the public.

Public Archaeology Program - Manton Cellar Hole We partnered with the staff of the Public Archaeology Lab to conduct a phase one public archaeological survey of the Manton Cellar Hole. This site is significant as the home site of one of Little Comptons few 19th and 20th families of color. We recruited 12 volunteers to work with archaeologists to dig 25 test pits, collect artifacts, and process them in the Public Archaeology Lab. The artifacts will eventually join our collection. The lead archaeologist is now working on a report, and we will share that with the public via a zoom lecture this spring. This project involved a dozen volunteers and the culminating lecture should serve an audience of approximately 75 people. A recording of the lecture and the final report will be archived and will add to our knowledge base of local history.
