Organizations Filed Purposes: Inspiring the maker in all of us

PVD YOUNG MAKERS 2019Working in partnership with the Providence public libraries we were contracted by the City of Providence to operate makerspaces in all the Providence public libraries. Programming runs daily on a rotating schedule. Programs are a blend of open studio, workshops and classes. The program serves 100-200 middle and high school youth weekly.

NEX-THE SUMMER IMMERSION (Serves 30)is designed to connect youth from Newports North End to their citys cultural, economic, educational, and recreational opportunities. We use bicycles as vehicles of exploration, visiting work and recreational sites, while meeting people and growing our youths social capital. Since most of the Summer Immersion students are located in Health Equity Zone (HEZ), many have never experienced some of Newports iconic locations, such as Cliff Walk or the mansions. Daily bike adventures let the kids see these locations while gaining knowledge, social skills, healthy habits, and confidence. The overall goal of the program is to help Newports youth progress physically, emotionally and intellectually through teamwork, mentorship and interest-based learning. There are two parts of the program: First, a 6-week intensive summer camp, followed by weekly adventures throughout the school year NEX-FUTURE LAB (serves 70) is a partnership with the Newport Community School enrichment program. We expose students to a variety artistic mediums such as: painting, sculpture, drawing. With each medium we go in depth. For example, we use watercolors, chinese brushes, acrylics. We talk about what it means to create a piece of art with depth, perspective and voice. This in depth exploration then transforms how the students view art, and they develop their own tastes. Each week features a different medium and/or artist. We have painted in the style of Gustav Klimt, explored graphic design with individualized t-shirts and learned the intricacies of Japanese origami. We recently added a jewelry class where fundamentals of jewelry construction and metalsmithing are introduced. The students created wire wrapped chains, beaded bracelets as well as fashioned tiaras to express ther individual personalities. The students enjoy the creative possibilities of adornment and the active problem solving of metalsmithing. Future Lab is how many students who dont live in the immediate neighborhood are introduced to FabNewport.NEX- MAKE YOUR LIFE ( serves 35) is a partnership with the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. Each Friday K-4th grade students learn how to cook and how to design. This is a burgeoning relationship and will provide a pathway for students, as they get older, to discover more of what FabNewport has to offer. The program instills teamwork, agency and confidence in our youth. NEX- SKUNKWORKS SUMMER CAMP (Serves 40)Skunkworks inspires students to look closely, explore complexity, and find opportunities to solve problems with personal meaning. Our camp motto is Creativity - Exploration - Mastery. With seven, one-week sessions, our campers are introduced to makerspace equipment such as the vinyl-cutter, laser-cutter, 3-D printer, sewing machine, and woodworking tools. They are next trained in 2-D and 3-D design software and then given a high degree of autonomy, with the task of working an advanced project that makes impact on their community. NEX- WEARABLES(serves 9)ran twice a week after school and teaches students to design clothing and accessories that light up, move, and make noise when triggered by motion, temperature and sound. Students learn techniques and concepts needed to build sewn circuits, soft switches, flex sensors, and mobile micro-controllers. This is a powerful introduction into a rapidly growing industry.DESIGN MAKE MANUFACTURE (Serves 10)runs twice a week after school and explores ancient human process of creative making, and connect it with the latest developments in digital fabricating. Each class starts with creativity exercises, which foster a sound foundation in the use of traditional hand tools, materials, and processes. The remainder of the class teaches students to use digital design tools, engineering and sculpting software, fabricating devices include 3-D printers, laser-cutters, and vinyl-cutters. OPEN LAB - Neighborhood Drop In (serves 100) FabNewport opens its doors for the community Fridays. We average 17 youth per open studio time. We offer the children a variety of activities which are called Go Stations. Each week we engage them with a 2D project, a 3D project, coding, computer time, and electronic challenges. The kids have created some truly impressive things for example, 10-year-old Geniya created a computer class in Roblox Studio(). It was her idea. On Fridays Geniya now teaches kids how to design and build their own video games. The course is well thought out, right down to having snacks for the kids and collecting feedback to improve her performance. COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES (Serves 4)is a college level class where student earn three University of Rhode Island credits and introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology impacts the world. More than traditional introduction to programming, it is a rigorous, engaging and approachable course that explores many of the foundational areas of computing so that all students understand how these concepts are transforming the world we live in.

Newport Check and Connect Program is an AmeriCorps & FabNewport program that is run in the three Newport public schools to help with the issue of absenteeism and truancy by pairing adult mentors with small cohorts of struggling students.
