Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMUNITY CENTER, INC. (MLKCC) NOURISHES, EDUCATES, AND SUPPORTS NEWPORT COUNTY RESIDENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING.

SINCE 1922, MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMUNITY CENTER, INC. (MLKCC) HAS CONTINUED TO EVOLVE IN PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY AND INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING FOR THE DIVERSE RESIDENTS OF NEWPORT COUNTY. MLKCC SERVES OVER 4,500 DIVERSE CLIENTS ANNUALLY.

HUNGER SERVICES STRIVES TO HELP RESIDENTS OF NEWPORT COUNTY MOVE FROM HUNGER TO HEALTH VIA URGENT FOOD SERVICES AND NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING AND EDUCATION. IN 2020, 4,252 INDIVIDUALS WERE SERVED THROUGH OUR VARIOUS HUNGER RELIEF PROGRAMS. OUR BREAKFAST PROGRAM, THE ONLY DAILY MEAL SITE IN NEWPORT COUNTY, SERVED 10,990 MEALS TO 229 INDIVIDUALS. FEED A FRIEND FOOD PANTRY PROVIDED EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE TO 4,252 CLIENTS IN NEED. BY PROVIDING GROCERIES TO OUR CLIENTS AT AN INCREASE FROM ONCE PER MONTH TO TWICE PER MONTH DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, A TOTAL OF 669,480 MEALS WERE PROVIDED TO OUR CLIENTS IN 2020. FOOD2FRIENDS MADE 1,272 GROCERY DELIVERIES TO 180 INDIVIDUALS AND THE MOBILE FOOD PANTRY DISTRIBUTED GROCERIES AT 134 SITES TO 1,625 INDIVIDUALS. THE CLIENT CHOICE PANTRY IS OPEN 3 DAYS EACH WEEK INCLUDING ONE EVENING PER WEEK TO ACCOMODATE WORKING FAMILIES, AS WELL AS ONE SATURDAY PER MONTH. CLIENTS RECEIVE HEALTHY, SEASONAL PRODUCE THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL FARMS AND COMMUNITY.

CHILDCARE/EDUCATIONAL SERVICES - PRESCHOOL, AFTER SCHOOL, AND SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS ARE DELIVERED IN A LITERACY AND SCIENCE-BASED ENVIRONMENT. OUR PROGRAMS PROVIDE LOW INCOME WORKING PARENTS WITH A SAFE AND NURTURING PLACE TO CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN DURING THE WORKDAY. OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS SUPPORT THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS OF THE CHILDREN. LIGHTHOUSE PRESCHOOL - DESIGNATED A PRESCHOOL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE, PROVIDING AN AFFORDABLE DHS-LICENSED EARLY EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN AGES 3 - SCHOOL AGE. COMMUNITIES REPRESENTED INCLUDE NEWPORT, MIDDLETOWN, WAKEFIELD, AND JAMESTOWN. DAILY PROGRAM INCLUDES BREAKFAST, HOT LUNCH AND SNACK, A CARING AND STRUCTURED ENVIRONMENT, CREATIVE PLAY, AND INDOOR AND OUTDOOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS - VARIED PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE TO NEWPORT COUNTY RESIDENTS THAT EDUCATE, EMPOWER, RAISE AWARENESS, AND ADDRESS COMMUNITY CONCERNS. THESE INCLUDE MONTHLY SENIOR LUNCH & LEARN, LIVFIT NUTRITION AND FITNESS CLASSES, AND FAMILY DINNERS. NUTRITION EDUCATION/COUNSELING IS OFFERED TO ALL CLIENTS FREE OF CHARGE. OUR CLIENT EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM OFFERS CLIENTS THE ABILITY TO WORK AT A PARKING LOT MANAGED BY US TO GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE AND SEASONAL INCOME. A TOTAL OF 1,114 CLIENTS PARTICIPATED IN ANY ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY PROGRAMS IN 2020.
