THE RHODE ISLAND COUNCIL FOR THE HUMANITIES SEEDS, SUPPORTS, AND STRENGTHENS PUBLIC HISTORY, CULTURAL HERITAGE, CIVIC EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BY AND FOR ALL RHODE ISLANDERS. FOUNDED IN 1973, THE RHODE ISLAND COUNCIL FOR THE HUMANITIES IS A STATE AFFILIATE OF THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES. AS A NON-PROFIT 501(C)(3), THE COUNCIL RECEIVES FUNDING FROM FEDERAL, STATE AND PRIVATE SOURCES.
THE RHODE ISLAND COUNCIL FOR THE HUMANITIES SEEDS, SUPPORTS, AND STRENGTHENS PUBLIC HISTORY, CULTURAL HERITAGE, CIVIC EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BY AND FOR ALL RHODE ISLANDERS.
THE RHODE ISLAND COUNCIL FOR THE HUMANITIES (THE COUNCIL) MARKED SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THE 2020 FISCAL YEAR, CONTINUING TO FULFILL ITS MISSION TO SEED, SUPPORT, AND STRENGTHEN PUBLIC HISTORY, CULTURAL HERITAGE, CIVIC EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BY AND FOR ALL RHODE ISLANDERS. THE COUNCIL WAS SUPPORTED THROUGH FEDERAL FUNDS, FOUNDATION GRANTS, INDIVIDUAL GIFTS, AND CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS.THE COUNCIL'S STANDARD GRANTMAKING PROGRAM AWARDED APPROXIMATELY $169,000 TO 30 GRANT PROJECTS ACROSS THE STATE. THESE GRANTS REACHED OVER 13,000 PEOPLE ATTENDING 118 GRANTEE EVENTS IN OVER 13 DIFFERENT CITIES AND TOWNS, AND THOUSANDS MORE ONLINE. IN APRIL 2020, THE COUNCIL ALSO LAUNCHED TWO NEW GRANT PROGRAMS IN SUPPORT OF HUMANITIES ORGANIZATIONS AFFECTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN RHODE ISLAND. THROUGH FUNDING PROVIDED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES AS PART OF THE FEDERAL CARES ACT, THE COUNCIL DISTRIBUTED 49 GENERAL OPERATING SUPPORT GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS ($345,646), 5 PROJECT GRANTS TO INDIVIDUALS ($10,000), AND 11 PROJECT GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS ($22,000) IN 20 DIFFERENT CITIES AND TOWNS.THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CENTER FOR PUBLIC HUMANITIES AND CULTURAL HERITAGE AT BROWN UNIVERSITY AND THE RHODE ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, THE COUNCIL CONTINUED TO PRODUCE RHODE TOUR, A WEBSITE AND SMARTPHONE APP FOR STORIES ABOUT RHODE ISLAND CULTURE AND HISTORY. THE APP AND WEBSITE INCREASED ITS NUMBER OF ANNUAL USERS TO OVER 40,000. RHODE TOUR NOW FEATURES OVER 300 STORIES AND 31 INDIVIDUAL TOURS.XIX: SHALL NOT BE DENIED, A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE RI DEPARTMENT OF STATE, CONNECTED OVER 30 ORGANIZATIONS THROUGH SHARED BRANDING AND VALUES TO COMMEMORATE THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT GUARANTEEING WOMEN'S RIGHT TO VOTE.THROUGH AN ONGOING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE RHODE ISLAND FOUNDATION AND RHODE ISLAND STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS, THE RI EXPANSION ARTS PROGRAM (RIEAP) CONTINUED TO OFFER FUNDING AND ORGANIZATIONAL ASSISTANCE TO COMMUNITY-BASED, CULTURALLY DIVERSE ARTS AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS. PIVOTING TO SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS HARD HIT BY THE PANDEMIC, RI EXPANSION ARTS PROVIDED $42,000 FOR 28 EMERGENCY RELIEF GRANTS TO CULTURAL HERITAGE ORGANIZATIONS.THE COUNCIL COMPLETED THE RI ARTS AND CULTURE RESEARCH (RIAC) FELLOWSHIP AND CONNECTED THE INITIATIVE TO CREATIVE ECONOMY, DIGITAL HUMANITIES, AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT FRAMEWORKS. THE RIAC FELLOW CREATED 184 ARTICLES ON WIKIPEDIA AND ADDED RHODE ISLAND CONNECTIONS TO MANY MORE EXISTING ARTICLES. THE COUNCIL ALSO LAUNCHED THE INITIATIVE CULTURE IS KEY: STRENGTHENING RHODE ISLAND'S CIVIC HEALTH THROUGH CULTURAL PARTICIPATION. UNDER THE MANAGEMENT OF A CULTURE IS KEY FELLOW SUPPORTED BY THE INITIATIVE AND ADVISED BY A COMMITTEE OF STATE LEADERS, FIVE RHODE ISLAND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS ARE UNDERTAKING PILOT PROJECTS AND ARE WORKING WITH LOCAL JOURNALISTS AND MEDIA PRODUCERS TO EXPLORE HOW TO DEEPEN THE CIVIC IMPACTS OF CULTURAL PROGRAMS.RESPONDING TO THE NEED FOR SAFE SOCIAL DISTANCING, THE COUNCIL CONVERTED THE ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE HUMANITIES TO A DIGITAL FORMAT AND HONORED A DIVERSE SELECTION OF HONOREES REPRESENTATIVE OF ALL RHODE ISLANDERS. OVER 150 PEOPLE ATTENDED VIRTUALLY, AND OVER 800 HAVE VIEWED THE CELEBRATION ONLINE.
