SPECIAL OLYMPICS COLORADO (SOCO) IS A CHAPTER OF SPECIAL OLYMPICS, A GLOBAL ORGANIZATION THAT USES THE SIMPLE PLATFORM OF SPORTS TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES (ID) BY GIVING THEM OPPORTUNITIES TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR TREMENDOUS COURAGE AND ABILITIES WHILE CHANGING SOCIETY'S PERCEPTIONS AND TREATMENT OF PEOPLE WITH ID. SINCE 1969, SOCO HAS BEEN STRENGTHENING FAMILIES, ATHLETES AND OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH SPORTS TRAINING AND ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS. SPECIAL OLYMPICS COLORADO PROVIDES YEAR-ROUND TRAINING AND COMPETITION IN 22 SPORTS FOR OVER 15,000 ATHLETES ACROSS THE STATE. ATHLETES HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE AT MORE THAN 100 LOCAL AREA AND STATE COMPETITION EVENTS EACH YEAR.
SOCO'S UNIFIED CHAMPION SCHOOL STRATEGY IS A SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAM THAT CHANGES SCHOOL CLIMATES TO BE ACCEPTING AND INCLUSIVE OF ALL STUDENTS AND ALL DIFFERENCES THROUGH UNIFIED SPORTS, YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND ENGAGING ALL STUDENTS.
SOCO'S HEALTH PROGRAMMING IS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ATHLETES TO INCREASE THEIR OVERALL HEALTH AND FITNESS IN ORDER TO PERFORM AT THEIR BEST. OUR HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM IS A SERIES OF HEALTH, NUTRITION, FITNESS, SAFETY AND INJURY PREVENTION LESSONS AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR SCHOOL YOUTH WITH AND WITHOUT DISABILITIES. WE ALSO OFFER FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS TO SOCO ATHLETES FOCUSING ON PREVENTATIVE CARE AND SCREENING FOR URGENT HEALTH NEEDS.
