ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF COLORADO SPRINGS IS A NONPROFIT, ALL VOLUNTEER, PHILANTHROPIC ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE WELL-BEING OF THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES OF EL PASO COUNTY.
ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF COLORADO SPRINGS IS A NONPROFIT, ALL VOLUNTEER, PHILANTRHOPIC ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE WELL-BEING OF THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES OF EL PASO COUNTY THROUGH THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS - OPERATION SCHOOL BELL, BUDDY BEAR, ASSAULT SURVIVOR KITS, SWEET DREAMS, OPERATION CAN YOU HEAR ME AND HALLOWEEN WISHES.
OPERATION SCHOOL BELL - THIS IS OUR MAJOR PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAM, AND PROVIDES CHILDREN IN NEED NEW SCHOOL CLOTHING AND HYGIENE KITS TO ENHANCE THEIR SELF ESTEEM AND ENCOURAGE REGULAR SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITHIN EL PASO COUNTY REFER CHILDREN K-12 TO THIS PROGRAM. BASED ON THEIR AGE, THE CHILD IS GIVEN AN ALLOTMENT FOR THEIR PURCHASE OF CLOTHING AT OUR LOCAL KOHL'S STORE. APPOINTMENTS ARE SCHEDULED FOR EACH CHILD AND LIMITATIONS ARE PLACED ON WHAT CAN BE PURCHASED. A VOLUNTEER HELPS WITH THE SHOPPING AND THE CHECKOUT TO ENSURE ADHERENCE TO THE PROGRAM GUIDELINES. IN THE PAST YEAR, 2321 CHILDREN WERE CLOTHED. THEY WERE AIDED BY 76 MEMBERS OF ASSISTANCE LEAGUE. THE STUDENTS WERE FROM THE 14 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN EL PASO COUNTY. ALL DISTRICTS PARTICIPATED ALONG WITH ONE NON-AFFILIATED SCHOOL. IN TOTAL, 205 SCHOOLS WERE SERVED.
ASSAULT SURVIVOR KITS (ASK) THIS PROGRAM, IN COOPERATION WITH MEMORIAL HOSPITAL'S SEXUAL ASSAULT CRISIS CENTER AND SEXUAL ASSAULT NURSE EXAMINER (SANE), PROVIDES CLOTHING AND HYGIENE KITS TO SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS WHO ARE REQUIRED TO LEAVE THEIR CLOTHING AS POLICE EVIDENCE. DURING THE PAST YEAR, 2,222 VICTIMS OF ASSAULT WERE GIVEN NEW CLOTHING. THESE CLOTHES INCLUDED WINTER SWEAT SHIRTS, SWEAT PANTS, SUMMER CAPRIS AND TOPS ALONG WITH BRAS,UNDERWEAR, SOCKS AND OTHER CLOTHING. ASSISTANCE LEAGUE IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION THAT OFFERS THIS HELP IN THE COLORADO SPRINGS AREA.
SWEET DREAMS - A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES MATTRESS/BOX SPRING SETS TO EMANCIPATED CHILDREN LEAVING FOSTER CARE. MATTRESS/BOX SPRING SETS ARE SUPPLIED TO SELECTED AGENCIES FOR DISTRIBUTION. ALSO INCLUDED WITH THE BEDS ARE SHEETS, PILLOW CASES AND TOWELS. THESE ITEMS ARE GIVEN TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO REACH THE AGE OF 18 AND CAN NO LONGER REMAIN IN FOSTER CARE. SOME OF THESE YOUNGSTERS HAVE NEVER HAD A BED OF THEIR OWN. BEDS ARE ALSO GIVEN TO FORMERLY HOMELESS YOUTH, WHO ARE REFERRED BY THE PLACE. THE PLACE IS AN AGENCY THAT OFFERS SERVICES AND SHELTER TO HOMELESS YOUTH, 15-21.
