To support, promote, and advocate for the Pikes Peak Library District's dynamic and evolving role.
Cash Grants and assistance to the Pikes Peak Library District and various branches. This is the primary purpose of the Friends. The Friends contributes to the following Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) programs and/or initiatives: -Adult Learner Program and Prizes -All Pikes Peak Reads -Children's Summer Adventure -Colorado Interlibrary Loan Conference -Staff Support and Development -Early Literacy -Grant Writer Salary -Human Library -Mini-Maker Faire Supplies/Food -Online Career High School Scholarships -Regional History Symposium -Branch Library Support
Personnel, supplies and other costs related to the operations of the Friends bookstores and sales. The Friends has over 925 members. The Friends held two major book sales in 2019, as well as maintaining a volunteer staff for the East, Penrose and 21c book stores. In addition, on-line book sales through Amazon and E-Bay have expanded and continue to grow. Volunteer Support Friends had 96 volunteers in 2019 between the stores, book sales, and scanners; collectively put in over 5,566 hours! The Friends work closely with PPLD staff, Friends' Volunteer Coordinator and Friends' Online Sales Coordinator to recruit, train, and retrain volunteers. These volunteers work in many areas, including bookstores, book sales, online sales preparation and PPLD events as needed. For 2020 the Friends Volunteer Coordinator and Online Sales Coordinator will merge to the Operations Coordinator. Beth Crumrine has been selected for the position. She has great ideas to engage the membership of Friends, to gather more books for the bookstores and book sales, and new ideas to draw patrons into the bookstores. Branch Library Friends Branch Library Friends groups led by Rita Jordan have had a busy 2019, revising their guideline booklet, updating the funds request form for District funds, supporting programs and staff in their perspective branch libraries. They meet on a quarterly basis and earned $113,816 this past year. Each Branch Library Friends group maintains a bookstore earning funds that help support individual Branch Library programs, activities and Branch Library staff. Social Media The Friends Communication and Membership Committee are making a concerted effort in engaging our membership the El Paso County community by communica ting through Facebook and other forms of social media. This has worked well in advertising book sales and the Literary Awards . In 2020 we will maintain and expand Friends social media presence, especially as it pertains to advertising on social media for volunteers, book sales, bookstores, online sales, and Friends sponsored programs. Friends will also begin writing a newsletter highlighting Friends and PPLD programs. Friends sponsored programs. Online Sales program. Online sales coordinator, Beth Crumrine and volunteers, have worked diligently to effectively leverage the better books and materials donated to the Online Sales inventory. Beth continues to follow Amazon guidelines and has expanded online sales to E-bay. Through their efforts in identifying and streamlining processes, policies and procedures, and intentionally marketing the program through print and social media,
Literary Awards: Frank Waters and Golden Quill The 2019 Literary Awards Luncheon was held on April 24 at the Antlers HoteJ The Golden Quill Award was presented by the Friends to recognize and celebrate outstanding literary achievement and exemplary community service. Colorado Springs retired teacher Dian Curtis Regan was honored with the Golden Quill Award for regional writers for her many books written for young readers; ranging from picture books to young adult novels. The Frank Waters Award honors and celebrates an author's writing achievements and literary excellence. Mystery writer, Ann Hillerman, received the Frank Waters Award for her body of work and continuing achievement in literature, for writing that celebrates humanity and mirrors the spirit of Frank Waters.
