Active for Justice and PPJPC communications: The printed newspaper Active for Justice was published one time in 2019. The Justice and Peace eWeekly newsletter was sent electronically to approximately 1600 subscribers once each week during 2019. The Justice & Peace eWeekly is a weekly survey of upcoming events, local news and activism opportunities in the Pikes Peak region meeting the mission of advocacy, education and sustainability. PPJPC was the fiscal sponsor of The Springs Echo, a street paper aimed at providing a helping hand - a hand up - to our vendors, to be a voice for the voiceless, and to advocate for solutions surrounding the complex issues related to homelessness in our community. The Springs Echo was published three times in 2019.
Cultivation of Peace, Nonviolence and Justice: PPJPC was once again a co-sponsor of the MLK Breakfast, which was a sold out event hosted by Colorado College. Proceeds from the Breakfast were shared with the local NAACP chapter. PPJPC used its share of the funds to hold Peace Camp 2019 in partnership with the City of Colorado Springs Hillside Community Center, a week long summer camp for area youth with the curriculum of Peace with Self, Peace with Each Other, Peace with the Earth. PPJPC hosted its Peace Breakfast on the UN International Day of Peace focused on opportunities for activism.
Social and Economic Justice Programming: PPJPC continues to offer Urban Experience, an emersion experience that walks the path of persons who are homeless in our community and identifies available resources intended to assist and serve people with housing and extreme poverty challenges. PPJPC, in collaboration with Adventures in Learning K-12, The Living Word Baptist Church, Men of Vision, facilitated and funded the L.E.A.D. Excellence Academy, a learning center located in the Hillside neighborhood in Southeast Colorado Springs. The Academy offered an alternative educational and mentoring classroom and program for youth who had been expelled from local school districts. The program intervenes and pivots youth out of risk of incarceration and toward the continuation of education. The program served approximately 24 youth during the school semesters Spring and Fall, 2019.
