THE CROW CANYON ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTER IS AN INNOVATIVE LEADER IN ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE THROUGH RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND COLLABORATION WITH AMERICAN INDIANS.
CONDUCTS ARCHEOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN COLLABORATION WITH AMERICAN INDIANS
RESEARCH AND EDUCATION - CROW CANYON'S RESEARCH FOCUSES ON THE RICH HISTORY OF THE ANCESTRAL PUEBLO INDIANS WHO INHABITED THE CANYONS AND MESAS OF THE MESA VERDE REGION IN SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. ASSISTED BY THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS AND ADULTS ENROLLED IN CROW CANYON PROGRAMS, WE HAVE CONDUCTED EXCAVATIONS AT MORE THAN 30 ANCIENT SITES, MAKING DISCOVERIES THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NEW UNDERSTANDING IN SOUTHWESTERN ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE LAST THREE DECADES. OUR RESEARCH TRADITION IS BASED ON INNOVATIVE INVESTIGATIVE METHODS, THE INCLUSION OF AMERICAN INDIANS IN THE STUDY OF THEIR OWN HISTORY, AND A COMMITMENT TO SHARING THE RESULTS OF OUR RESEARCH THROUGH A SERIES OF INNOVATIVE PRINT AND ONLINE PUBLICATIONS. OUR CURRENT RESEARCH IS THE NORTHERN CHACO OUTLIERS PROJECT AND FOCUSES ON THE HAYNIE SITE, A MULTI-COMPONENT ANCESTRAL PUEBLO VILLAGE WITH TWO PUEBLO II PERIOD (AD 950-1150) GREAT HOUSES LOCATED NORTHEAST OF CORTEZ, COLORADO. THIS SITE COMPRISES SOME OF THE DENSEST CONCENTRATION OF GREAT HOUSES FOUND NORTH OF THE SAN JUAN RIVER. EXCAVATION AT THE HAYNIE SITE IS PROVIDING INFORMATION AS TO WHEN THE SITE WAS INITIALLY OCCUPIED, WHEN IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DEPOPULATED, AND HOW THIS RELATES TO OTHER COMMUNITIES IN THE REGION. DATA COLLECTED IS CONTRIBUTING TO A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF RESOURCE SUSTAINABILITY, THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL IMPACTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL DOWNTURNS, ANCIENT COMMUNITIES AND REGIONAL SYSTEMS, MIGRATION, AND HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT RELATIONSHIPS.
CAMPUS SERVICES INCLUDE THE FOOD, LODGING, TRANSPORTATION AND OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED FOR PARTICIPANTS IN VARIOUS PROGRAMS THAT ARE HELD ON THE CROW CANYON CAMPUS. OUR 170-ACRE RURAL CAMPUS NESTLED IN THE CANYON AND MESAS OF SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO PROVIDES A SAFE AND SECURE HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME FOR THE THOUSANDS OF STUDENT AND ADULT PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS WHO COME TO CROW CANYON EACH YEAR.
CULTURAL EXPLORATIONS PROVIDE THOUGHT-PROVOKING TRAVEL ADVENTURES THAT ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO EXAMINE THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF TODAY AND THOSE WHO LIVED IN THE PAST BOTH HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. BY EXPLORING PAST AND PRESENT CULTURES AND ENGAGING AMERICAN INDIANS AND OTHER INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AS ADVISORS AND PROGRAM SCHOLARS, CROW CANYON TRAVELERS GAIN A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF THE HUMAN PAST AND BECOME BETTER STEWARDS OF OUR PRECIOUS, NONRENEWABLE CULTURAL RESOURCES. CROW CANYON'S ONE-OF-A-KIND TRIPS FEATURE EXPERT ACADEMIC AND INDIGENOUS SCHOLARS, SMALL GROUPS, AND PRIVILEGED ACCESS TO RARELY-VISITED PLACES.
