Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE MISSION OF THE MONTEZUMA LAND CONSERVANCY IS TO PERMANENTLY PROTECT IMPORTANT OPEN LANDS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LANDOWNERS, IN ORDER TO CONSERVE AGRICULTURAL, NATURAL AND SCENIC OPEN SPACE RESOURCES IN AND AROUND MONTEZUMA AND DOLORES COUNTIES.
Land Protection and Conservation: During 2019 MLC successfully worked to secure two new conservation easements, one that would close during the calendar year. In addition to these new acres MLC hired a new fulltime Conservation Director to help accelerate the programs conservation projects. The organization continues to focus on bargain sale transactions funded through partnering conservation funders and donated easements.
Stewardship: In 2019, the organization was responsible for stewardship and monitoring of 88 conservation easements totaling 44,521 acres. By the end of the year MLC had added one additional easement totaling 167 acres and was positioned to close on an additional 1,332 acres sometime the following year. No easement restrictions were decreased or terminated. The organization successfully monitored all easements thereby ensuring the continued protection of these important lands and ongoing relationships with landowners.
Outreach: The organizations outreach and education programming continues to grow with rapid statewide and national success. These programs are primarily focused on youth engagement to the outdoors through MLCs education center at Fozzies Farm and through MLCs leadership of a local coalition called the Montezuma Inspire Coalition. The focus of these programs is to work to build more equitable access to the outdoors for members of the community. MLCs youth programs also provide paid internship opportunities for local youth that allow them to connect to career opportunities in conservation and grow in their leadership and peer interactions.
