CLIENT SERVICES: A BILINGUAL, STATEWIDE FOOD RESOURCE HOTLINE AND MOBILE OUTREACH TEAM CONNECTED MORE THAN 21,000 INDIVIDUALS IN FISCAL YEAR 2020 TO FOOD RESOURCES, INCLUDING FOOD PANTRIES, SNAP, WIC AND CHILD MEAL SITES. TEAM MEMBERS SUBMITTED ONLINE SNAP APPLICATIONS ON BEHALF OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ALSO HELPED THEM FIND FOOD RESOURCES IN OR NEAR THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. THE OUTREACH TEAM PROVIDED IN-PERSON ASSISTANCE IN THE COMMUNITY, BUT SINCE THE COVID OUTBREAK, HAS LIMITED IN-PERSON WORK. IN 2020, WE BUILT AND SUSTAINED A NETWORK OF 36 PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS THAT WE TRAINED TO PROVIDE SNAP APPLICATION ASSISTANCE IN 50 COUNTIES AROUND THE STATE. HFC AND OUR PARTNERS SUBMITTED 9,689 SNAP APPLICATIONS IN OUR FISCAL YEAR 2020.
COLORADO FOOD PANTRY NETWORK THE COLORADO FOOD PANTRY NETWORK (CFPN) WAS FORMED BY HFC TO BUILD A STRUCTURE AND SYSTEM FOR FOOD PANTRIES TO WORK TOGETHER IN DEVELOPING THEIR COLLECTIVE CAPACITY TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THOSE FACING HUNGER AND TO ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE. IN 2020, THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE CFPN GREW TO 100 PANTRY MEMBERS WORKING TOGETHER TO SHARE RESOURCES AND DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE WAYS OF OBTAINING THE NUTRITIOUS FOOD PANTRY CLIENTS WANT AND NEED FOR THEIR PANTRY INVENTORY. CFPN DEVELOPED A SYSTEM OF ONLINE COMMUNICATION AND ANNUAL GATHERINGS TO ALLOW FOOD PANTRIES TO SHARE OPERATIONAL BEST PRACTICES AND OTHER RESOURCES. THIS PROVED PARTICULARLY IMPACTFUL AS COVID-19 BEGAN AFFECTING FOOD SUPPLIES, AND FOOD PANTRIES WERE FORCED TO QUICKLY PIVOT TO NEW MODELS OF FOOD ACQUISITION AND DISTRIBUTION. THROUGH CFPN, PANTRIES WERE ABLE TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER AND SHARE RESOURCES THROUGH THE MANY CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY COVID-19. THE CFPN ALSO SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED FOR STATE LEGISLATIVE FUNDING TOTALING 500,000 FOR THE FOOD PANTRY ASSISTANCE GRANT PROGRAM.
CHILD NUTRITION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: HFC PARTNERED WITH STATE AGENCIES, SCHOOL DISTRICTS, NON-PROFIT SPONSORS AND COMMUNITIES TO DEVELOP SOLUTIONS TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN SUMMER MEALS, SCHOOL MEALS AND WIC NUTRITION PROGRAMS. HFC BEGAN AN OUTREACH CAMPAIGN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH IMMIGRANT-BASED COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO UTILIZE PROMOTORAS AND OTHER TRUSTED COMMUNITY LEADERS TO ENCOURAGE IMMIGRANT FAMILIES TO PARTICIPATE IN CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAMS. HFC ALSO CREATED A METRO DENVER WIC COALITION FOCUSED ON IDENTIFYING BARRIERS TO ACCESSING WIC FOR FAMILIES WHO ARE ELIGIBLE BUT NOT ENROLLED.
