Organizations Filed Purposes:
To provide an inclusive youth instrumental music program that promotes youth development, fosters peer camaraderie, instills respect for culture, and develops a pursuit of excellence.
Colorado Honor Band's extra-curricular program is an education model that blends full-ensemble instruction, small-group training, and one-on-one instruction. Founded in 1953, we have served hundreds of families over several generations. We believe that the community can be strengthened via strong music experiences. Our normal program has four program levels ranging from beginners to an advanced high school age band that performs college-level repertoire. Normally, band classes are held in Denver, Littleton, Centennial and Westminster schools in Colorado, and lower level students may choose where they wish to learn. The upper level bands meet at a single location in Denver. Normally concerts are held in January and May at the end of the school semester, and all students participate. Summer concerts and held in various location in the Denver Metro area. This year our program was forced to switch to on-line instruction, and performances were recordings made by individual students or smaller ensembles. We look forward to resuming our full program later in 2021.
Our summer music program is a reduced version of our regular school-year program, with regular instruction and a series of free concerts in various locations. A treasured part of our summer program is a week-long band camp, resulting in a fun learning experience, with a concert at the end of the camp involving all camp participants. Unfortunately, we had to cancel camp in 2020 due to COVID-19, and instruction during the summer was on-line.
Our concerts are part of our educational model, but we list it as a separate program as it involves not only the students, but showcases the students' evolving music skills to their families and friends. Normally we hold two major concerts, one in January and one in May that bring all of our students together to perform separately within their own skill level, and often all students performing with the entire student body. Normally we also perform smaller concerts during the year, and free concerts during the summer.
