2019 MARKED THE NINTH ANNIVERSARY OF POP CULTURE CLASSROOMS ANNUAL PROGRAM EVENT: DENVER POP CULTURE CON, FORMERLY KNOWN AS DENVER COMIC CON. TOTAL ATTENDANCE WAS JUST UNDER 100,000, WITH THOUSANDS OF FANS EXPERIENCING THIS FAMILY-FRIENDLY POP CULTURE FAN EXTRAVAGANZA THAT SEEKS TO INSPIRE A LOVE OF LEARNING, INCREASE LITERACY, CELEBRATE DIVERSITY AND BUILD COMMUNITY THROUGH POP CULTURE. APPROX 400 HOURS OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING WAS AVAILABLE AT THE EVENT AS WELL AS SPECIFIC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATORS INTERESTED IN USING POP CULTURE TO INCREASE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. IN ADDITION, AS PART OF OUR EXPERICE THE COMIX AND EDUCATORS' DAY PROGRAMS, OVER 1,000 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS FROM LOCAL SCHOOLS WERE PROVIDED FREE PASSES AND A CURATED EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AT THE EVENT. ALSO FEATURED WAS THE POP CULTURE CLASSROOM KIDS LAB - A 10000 SQ FT AREA DEDICATED TO STEM-BASED EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS AGES 3-12. THE LAB ALSO FEATURES A TEEN AREA CALLED THE 8-BIT LOUNGE WHERE ARTISTS, WRITERS, ACTORS, ANIMATORS AND OTHER CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS CONDUCT WORKSHOPS AND CONVERSATIONS WITH TEENS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING SKILLS AND EXPLORING CAREERS IN CREATIVE FIELDS. AN ESTIMATED 8,000-9,000 CHILDREN AND TEENS ENGAGED IN KIDS LAB PROGRAMMING DURING THE 2019 DENVER POPCULTURE CON.FOR THE FIRST TIME, POP CULTURE CLASSROOM ALSO BROUGHT ITS DYNAMIC CONVENTION TO THE RENO/SPARKS CONVENTION CENTER FOR RENO POPCULTURE CON. THE EVENT WAS SMALL BUT SUCCESSFUL, WITH A TOTAL ATTENDANCE OF ABOUT 10,000. THE GOALS OF THE EVENT PARALLEL THE GOALS OF THE DENVER SHOW - TO PROVIDE FAMILY-FUN, WEEKEND-LONG ENTERTAINMENT AND EDUCATION TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AND THE KIDS' LAB WERE RECREATED THERE AS WELL.IN ADDITION TO OUR PROGRAMMING AT DENVER POPCULTURE CON, IN 2019, POP CULTURE CLASSROOM ALSO REACHED STUDENTS WITH OUR EDUCATIONAL EVENTS, PROGRAMS AND CURRICULUM, INCLUDING: * STORYTELLING THROUGH COMICS, WHICH USES A STANDARDS-ALIGNED SERIES OF LESSONS TO ENGAGE READERS AND TEACH VOCABULARY, CREATIVE WRITING AND ART APPRECIATION FOR STUDENTS IN 4TH THROUGH 7TH GRADES. * GAME ON! A GAME-DESIGN UNIT THAT LEVERAGES PLAY-BASED LEARNING TO DEEPEN STUDENT LEARNING ACROSS CONTENT AREAS. * COLORFUL HISTORY - A COLORADO-BASED HISTORY-FOCUSED COMIC PUBLISHED BI-MONTHLY. THE FOCUS IS TO EXPLORE, TEACH, AND PRESENT CHARACTERS, EVENTS AND ISSUES IMPORTANT TO COLORADO. EACH COMIC INCLUDES A COMPANION TEACHING GUIDE. 2700 COLORFUL HISTORY COMICS WERE DOWNLOADED IN 2018.* STANDARDS-ALIGNED GRAPHIC NOVEL TEACHING GUIDES THAT HELP EUCATORS BRING THESE TEXTS INTO CLASSROOMS AND COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.* POP CULTURE CLASSROOM CONDUCTED 100 WORKSHOPS IN 2019, SERVING 1750 STUDENTS AT LOCATIONS THORUGHOUT METRO DENVER AND AT OUR ONSITE CLASSROOM IN THE POP CULTURE CLASSROOM OFFICES IN SOUTHWEST DENVER.
